The script of [Night Train] pushes the search for a murder suspect among the passengers to the background. By pushing adherence to the unity of place to the extreme, Kawalerowicz violated the conventions of the Polish Film School Go to Full Review

05/27/2018 Technically I suppose this is a thriller but it's much more "Elevator to the Gallows' than 'Strangers on a Train', with an emphasis on style and mood rather than plot. It's beautifully shot and in Lucyna Winnicka it has an actress who, like Moreau, holds the viewer's attention without actually having to say or do very much. See more 06/30/2015 Polish film is not a regular staple on my selection, which is a great remiss of me and surely will change after this one, from one of the leading maestros of Polish cinema school, it is my first encounter with Kawalerowicz, NIGHT TRAIN ostensibly is a Hitchcock-esque mystery with a beguiling noir sheen for the first glance, yet soon viewers will notice there is no McGuffin employed in the story except a promise that a murderer is at large, Kawalerowicz doesn't sink to atmospheric suspense to keep audience hooked in its narrative, and steers us through an overnight journey on a sleeping train where strangers shelter hidden agenda within a confined space. keep reading my review on my blog: http://wp.me/p1eXom-1Wz See more 07/24/2012 Great Polish thriller, one of the greatest cinematographic achievements in the post-war Poland. Not as known as it should be. The story is compelling and suspenseful and the portrayals are clear and expressive. See more 06/16/2012 The unity of time, place and action at its best. See more 10/19/2011 I won't deny the influence of Hitchcock and the initial fragments of the by-then fresh Nouvelle Vague, yet I won't deny its superiority over Hitchcock either. Strangers on a Train (1951)? This groundbreaking Polish masterpiece conglomerates a vox populi of a community of strangers put together under mysterious circumstances. It is labeled as a thriller but its plot emphasis goes much more beyond. The score is superb and the photography work is top-notch: claustrophobic when necessary and exciting and absorbing when capturing an outside world awaiting for unexplained and tragic events to step foot on natural soil. 99/100 See more 06/02/2010 The directing in this film is marvelous. Kawalerowicz uses tight shots and makes the most of crowded hallways to add to the claustrophobic feeling of this film. A good, noirish train movie, much in the style of Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train. See more Read all reviews
