Latha Srinivasan Hindustan Times Director Jotish Shankar, as captain of the ship, has skillfully transferred the script onto the big screen, capturing every nuance and adding some of his own to make the movie technically superb. Jan 31, 2025 Full Review S. R. Praveen The Hindu Ponman could have easily turned into another film with a progressive message against dowry and the unhealthy obsession with gold. But what we get instead is an engrossing, non-judgemental study of characters, most of whom are victims of social malaise. Jan 30, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews

arvind s Basil's hot streak continues onto what may be his last acting role for sometime. Directed by art director turned director Jothish Shankar, Ponman is the story of Ajesh, a gold dealer based in Kollam. Ajesh arranges for 25 sovereign of gold for Steffy's wedding, but when her husband Mariyano refuses to pay the balance amount/return the gold not paid for, Ajesh goes all out to claim what is not rightfully theirs. Ponman holds a mirror to the society where dowry and gold still have prominence. It is sad to see how the bride's family is expected to cough up sovereigns of gold that is beyond their financial capacity. Steffy, played by Lijomol Jose is forced to get married to a goon against her wishes. Basil Joseph gives a performance that is completely different from what you have seen him do till date. He plays a man who perseveres and is willing to go to any extent to do his job. Mariyano, played by a terrifying Sajin Gopu, is everyone's worst nightmare with his intimidating nature. Deepak Parambol, Anand Manmadhan co-star. Ponman is an effective film that drives home the message of how dowry and gold ruin marriages and relationships. Director Jothish Shankar presents this problem in a very intense way with Basil & Sajin in never before seen avatars. A must watch and one of the best of 2025.
