What to Know

Critics Consensus

A slow-burning spectral thriller, Presence reaffirms that Soderbergh plays with form as deftly as he flits between genres.

Audience Says

Like the ghost at its center, Presence is a voyeuristic slow burn that may not satisfy those seeking traditional horror but may spook those who appreciate well-executed psychological thrillers.

Tara Brady Irish Times As with Kimi and Unsane, Soderbergh occasionally has more fun with the constraints than we do. There’s nothing as compelling or creepy as Kristen Stewart’s dance with the unseen in Personal Shopper. Rated: 3/5 Feb 28, 2025 Full Review Christy Lemire FilmWeek (LAist) I love that after all these decades as a filmmaker, Soderbergh still likes to do these cool little experimental larks. Feb 11, 2025 Full Review Peter Rainer FilmWeek (LAist) It's a gimmick... But it's a good gimmick, not one I had really seen before. Feb 11, 2025 Full Review Jared Mobarak Hey, Have You Seen ...? Presence is constructed with the intention of reminding us about the escapism cinema offers removed from the myriad ways in which social media rewired how our brains consume media. Rated: 8/10 Jun 27, 2025 Full Review John Serba Decider Presence isn’t like other movies, and that should be applauded. Whether it’s satisfying for the audience is a different matter. Jun 24, 2025 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy The decision to keep most of the characters underdeveloped and their activities unexplained might have made Koepp and Soderbergh feel like they were adding to the overall mystery, but they were undermining it instead. Spencer Good experimental film that will bore most people. As a film addict it was intriguing. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/25/25 Full Review Juandi This concept of it being the spirit’s POV is so cool & had so much potential. It would’ve been great if 90% of the film wasn’t boring. The entirety of the film sets up a climax that seemed to last 30 seconds & ended up being lackluster. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/06/25 Full Review Martha I didn’t like this movie. I felt it was overhyped and it under delivered. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 05/16/25 Full Review Kay B Think the story line was good. And I love a movie I have trouble guessing the end of Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/29/25 Full Review Jason POV of a ghost, a big brother's redemption, the life of a busy woman and a father whose only weapon is asking for help. Not your typical horror movie, but it's a nice message. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/17/25 Full Review Sheri A slow build … I really liked this movie it’s unlike any ghost / haunting movie I’ve ever seen. The tension building atmosphere and authentic performances hook you in. The movie does start slow but as the tension builds you become captivated and invested in the story of this family and this house. There is a major twist towards the end that comes as a complete surprise. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/13/25 Full Review Read all reviews
