Critics Consensus

A slow-burning spectral thriller, Presence reaffirms that Soderbergh plays with form as deftly as he flits between genres.

Christy Lemire FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) I love that after all these decades as a filmmaker, Soderbergh still likes to do these cool little experimental larks. Feb 11, 2025 Full Review Peter Rainer FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) It's a gimmick... But it's a good gimmick, not one I had really seen before. Feb 11, 2025 Full Review Rex Reed Observer 'Presence' squanders the talents of David Koepp and Steven Soderbergh in a lifeless, cliché-ridden ghost story that delivers neither scares nor suspense. Rated: 1/4 Feb 11, 2025 Full Review Nadine Whitney AWFJ.org Presence is a sophisticated examination of trauma, redemption, and the ongoing nature of loss that comes together in an astonishing final act. Feb 17, 2025 Full Review Andrew F. Peirce The Curb Presence is an impressive continuation of Soderbergh’s career-long experiment of testing how the form of filmmaking impacts its intended function: a satisfying emotional experience for audiences. Feb 17, 2025 Full Review Sean McGeady Radio Times Light on frights but steeped in emotion, Presence is playful, sad and slyly funny all at once, and its mournful elegance is sure to age well. Jayvaun I’m sorry but it was awful. Scary movies just aren’t scary anymore. Maybe it wasn’t meant to be scary… Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/19/25 Full Review lester great film., really neat premise. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/18/25 Full Review Anthony J A novel take on a well worn (and in many cases WORN OUT) genre. Masterfully shot and edited, really cool score and a story that oozes a palpable sense of eeriness. One of the more memorable ghost stories I've seen since The Others. I also appreciate the brisk runtime, not that I'm opposed to longer movies but some stories are more effective in short doses. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/18/25 Full Review Adam Man this movies weird asf Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/14/25 Full Review jeanette End sucked but was good until then Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/13/25 Full Review Kevin One of the least entertaining movies I have ever watched. No character development. No suspense. Poor experience. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/12/25 Full Review Read all reviews
