Critics Consensus

Pretty Woman may be a yuppie fantasy, but the film's slick comedy, soundtrack, and casting can overcome misgivings.

The impersonal direction is Garry Marshall's, whose work here amounts to a glistening mixture of sleaze and misogynist clichés. Go to Full Review

It fits into the romance genre but it has some disgusting ideas to impart about what you can get out of a relationship and how men and women view each other. It’s misogynistic in its treatment of female characters who are not Ward... Go to Full Review

Thom H @ThomH 4d The intelligence and wit of this glass-slipper heart-of-gold fantasy are shocking too, but hell hath no part of the surprise. See more Christian M Dec 4 'Pretty Woman' surprised me far more than expected. Despite my initial prejudices, it turned out to be a much stronger film. Richard Gere delivers a natural, elegant performance, while Julia Roberts brings energy and vulnerability to a predictable yet heartfelt character. The story is easy to foresee, but the script is precise and raises subtle moral questions. It contains absurd and illogical moments, yet they oddly work in its favor. The cinematography is simple, serving the characters’ journey, and the direction supports the narrative effectively. Memorable music and agile editing keep the film engaging. Blending romance and light comedy without melodrama, it focuses on a woman finding her place. I assumed it had nothing to offer, but watching it on my father’s recommendation made me realize how wrong I was. Nota 6.5 See more Spencer P. @s_plewe Nov 11 With Julia Roberts and Richard Gere bonding like glue, Pretty Woman is a contemporary fairy tale that has plenty to say about public perceptions of prostitutes, as well as being kind across class distinctions. See more Anthony Q. @acquagliato Nov 10 Schmaltzy and predictable, but charming and full of heart thanks to Richard Gere and Julia Roberts. See more Rohan H Oct 31 Pretty Woman (1990) is one of those rare romantic comedies that has truly stood the test of time — a sparkling blend of humour, heart, and undeniable chemistry. Directed by Garry Marshall, the film is a modern Cinderella story that brings together two unforgettable performances and a message about love, transformation, and self-worth. Julia Roberts shines as Vivian Ward, a spirited and kind-hearted woman whose charm and honesty light up the screen. Her performance is magnetic — full of warmth, humour, and humanity — and it’s easy to see why it launched her into stardom. She brings depth to a character who could have been a stereotype, instead making Vivian funny, strong, and deeply relatable. Richard Gere is equally captivating as Edward Lewis, the polished businessman who hires Vivian as a companion for a week — only to find himself falling for her genuine nature. The chemistry between Gere and Roberts is effortless, giving the film its heart and magic. The supporting cast adds flavour and comedy throughout, and Garry Marshall’s direction keeps the tone light while still allowing for real emotional moments. The film’s Los Angeles backdrop sparkles with style and glamour, and the now-iconic soundtrack — featuring Roy Orbison’s “Oh, Pretty Woman” — perfectly captures the film’s playful, romantic energy. What makes Pretty Woman special is that beneath its glitz and humour, it’s a story about two people helping each other rediscover who they are. It’s about acceptance, growth, and the idea that everyone deserves love and respect — no matter where they come from. See more Read all reviews
