Critics Consensus

A delightfully postmodern fairy tale, The Princess Bride is a deft, intelligent mix of swashbuckling, romance, and comedy that takes an age-old damsel-in-distress story and makes it fresh.

The Princess Bride easily transcends expectations, as a fantasy that has a few pertinent things to say about the genre, including the odd fact that the heroes of such things are often prettier than the heroines. Go to Full Review

What’s unacceptable about this threadbare fantasy is its contemporary irrelevance. Reiner and Goldman betray the instructional tradition that fables and legends pass on. Go to Full Review

Susan Jan 28 This movie is an absolute classic. As the grandfather says, it has romance, pirates adventure, Magic, revenge, and justice! Beautifully shot, the actors are great. The dialogue is witty – no reason not to love this movie. It takes Mark Knopfler’s very 1980’s style music and a quaint framing device of a grandfather reading a bedtime story to his sick grandson. Reiner’s direction is fanciful and fun at all times. Peter Falk is awesome as the kindly grandfather reading to his bratty, yet eager grandson. Cary Elwes is wonderful as the heroic Westley. His charm and charisma are dauntless as he effortlessly delivers hilarious dialogue and quirky insults. Robin Wright is lovely and loyal as Princess Buttercup. Mandy Patinkin is riveting as the sword master Inigo Montoya on the hunt for revenge after his father’s murder. His fencing duel with Cary Elwes is one of the best in cinema history as is his climactic moment. The lovable Andre the Giant is so quaint as the simple-minded and good-hearted Fezzik. Wallace Shawn is gut busting as the abusive and arrogant Vizzini. See more Hannah H Nov 8 It achieves more in an hour and a half than many modern movies achieve in a 3 hour run time. Classic, hilarious, quotable, and emotional. Stunner cast See more Steven A Nov 5 This is a fun movie. And you may think that's a throwaway statement but trust me when I say I don't consider many movie to be fun. Many are meaningful, many are thought-provoking, many are dramatic, or action packed. But not many are fun. This movie makes me think of the simple joys of childhood stories while mixed with the witty banter and terrific performances that please my adult sensibilities. Funniest thing is I know I wouldn't have appreciated it as a child and so I'm glad I discovered it later in life. There's just not enough good fantasy movies out there, less that stand the test of time, and even less that just plain fun. This is a fun movie. Famous moments, iconic lines, not much can be expressed in words. Watch it, you’ll understand. Five stars. See more Read all reviews
