Since 1975, the tiny country of East Timor has been a site of political unrest and ruthless government oppression. In 1991, Kamal Bamadhaj, a young activist from New Zealand who had visited the country several times, travels to East Timor for a U.N. inspection. His death in the infamous massacre in the capital city of Dili prompts his mother to file a lawsuit against top military officers, which serves to alert the world to the atrocities in East Timor.
