Shubhra Gupta The Indian Express Prakash Jha has the rare ability to spin stories which are raw and grounded. `Raajneeti' should have been all this and more, given that it is about dynastic politics, and a much-publicised representation of real-life figures. Rated: 2/5 Apr 16, 2019 Full Review Lisa Tsering Hollywood Reporter Its adult and hard-hitting subject matter probably won't bring in masala-loving family crowds, but it offers a lesson with long-lasting emotional and moral impact for thinking audiences. Jun 10, 2010 Full Review Rachel Saltz New York Times The film -- full of romance, intrigue and fraternal strife -- is too diffuse to score political points. Or to have much impact. Rated: 2.5/5 Jun 4, 2010 Full Review Shah Shahid Blank Page Beatdown Rajneeti is a layered film with a lot of nuances. Every scene becomes a revelation to the overall direction of the story. Jan 20, 2021 Full Review Itrath Syed Georgia Straight Once you settle into the film, it veers from its original promise and descends into a bloody and incoherent mess. Jul 3, 2016 Full Review Frank Lovece Film Journal International More pulpy than political, this Godfather-ripoff Hindi electoral drama is a candidate for oblivion in U.S. theatres. Audience Member Its one of the best Indian political drama . It depicts harsh realities of politics of sub continent and if you look around . You can find many similar real life stories of political families and their bloody feuds among cousins or next generation after a successful journey or their forefathers . India and Pakistan both are filled with such real life stories of political families and history of bloody elections. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Definitely a weak plot. Amazing star cast, lump-sum of budget spent to portray story of Mahabharat of modern times. Still better than expected, some parts not understandable, wrt to Mahabharata. Disappointed Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Ahmed M The story is weak and the performances by the actors can't save this movie as well. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/05/16 Full Review Audience Member Watching political drama films is not in my routine list. Thus my review may not appeal to each and everyone. It's true that Prakash Jha is a master at making Political films, but its also true that he faltered to handle such a sensitive subject. Raajneeti is a predictable political revenge saga that has no soul in itself. The positive efforts of the film are overshadowed by damp writing, poor direction, and of course, a very 'political' type of routine screenplay. The film starts off well. Till the interval, many things go well. However, a poorly scripted second half just doesn't impress. Talking of the performances, every actor, except Katrina, gives an immensely powerful performance. Rather, performances are the only redeeming feature of this film. The music is charming, but was however, not just needed at all. The cinematography is excellent. The climax of the film is well scripted. Talking about what's not good in the film, its obvious that a poor writing and characterization kills the film. Although you see Naseeruddin Shah in all posters prominently, you don't get to see him for more than 2 or 3 minutes. Ranbir Kapoor's character is the worst scripted. One is lost in translation, thinking whether his character is positive or negative. There are various moments where you realize that the film's canvas was very big and the subject could have been exploited better. But, the film falls short of all the expectations one makes from this film. But, there are a few scenes, which really deserve praise. The sequences involving Ajay Devgn are simply the best ones. Apart from this, there is nothing you can expect from this film. On the whole, Raajneeti is a film that never takes itself seriously in terms of doing justice to its subject, but does take itself too seriously in terms of being a "Raajneeti" as a bad film. If you like such political revenge sagas, watch it, otherwise, avoid it with no regrets. Heavily disappointing. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member absolutely nothing to boast of... a complete unrealistic, awkward take on Indian politics trying too hard to imbibe Mahabharat at times... Ranbir iand katrina... the most disappointing of all... Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Prakash Jha has ripped off Godfather to get the role of Ranbir Kapoor (Al Pacino) and most dialogues are copied. A strong cast wasted, Manoj Bajpai is a perfect actor who can transform into any form of acting. Ranbir is a copy of Al Pacino , little too romantic for a political movie. Nana as always the best. Katrina looks like Sonia Gandhi. Overall movie is bit lengthy but watchable. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Read all reviews
