Audience Member Alan Rudolph is back after a 15 year hiatus and the result is a beautiful fable that lives and breathes and is more human than any film I've seen this year. John DeFore Hollywood Reporter Moviegoers expecting a sprightly golden-years romance have come to the wrong place. So have those looking for a moody but credible reflection on decades of regrets. May 7, 2018 Full Review Jeannette Catsoulis New York Times Comprising multiple, loosely interwoven plot threads united as much by the characters' lyrical speech patterns as their end-of-life longings, "Ray Meets Helen" has a wistful, whimsical sophistication that has all but disappeared from movies. May 3, 2018 Full Review Michael Rechtshaffen Los Angeles Times While it bears many of the thematic and stylistic hallmarks that made Rudolph a reliable figure on the '80s indie scene with such films as "Choose Me" and "Trouble in Mind," this mannered character study comes across as more affected than affecting. May 2, 2018 Full Review Todd Jorgenson Cinemalogue Trying to balance whimsical romantic fantasy with a melancholy examination of guilt and regret, the film struggles to make its characters likeable or believable. Jan 4, 2019 Full Review Armond White National Review "Ray Meets Helen is political in the sense that matters most. It goes beneath the surface of its characters' differences to show what they have in common - what makes them soul mates." Jun 26, 2018 Full Review David Noh Film Journal International Sadly, the magic doesn't happen this time for Alan Rudolph, a very special filmmaker whose specialty has always been romance among the lost.
