      Critics Consensus

Ethan Hawke and Ewan McGregor are almost -- but not quite -- compelling enough to make up for Raymond & Ray's listless narrative.

Robert M Great acting, interesting story. Some heavy dramatic scenes and balanced with comic relief Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/23/22 Full Review Suely M Funny, crazy and interesting. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/11/24 Full Review Christopher C Life can be messy and so can funerals. Great performances by all, I felt. Dark comedy, surprises, happy and unhappy endings. When I saw the reviews I was floored, as if I'd seen a different movie. I rarely watch movies twice, but will this one and with a friend. It was refreshingly gritty. A little biting. Bravo! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/19/24 Full Review David P How crazy can a family be? Let's count the ways. This film is an honest if over the top study of how dire actions can affect one well into adulthood. Teach your children well. Especially if you hadn't been. Maybe the most revelatory scene that depicted that notion is Raymond's breakdown at the funeral. Which, in the same vein as but not quite as out from nowhere as when Vince shot Marvin in Pulp Fiction, was as terrifying as it was entertaining to watch. The tragic honesty of that scene was that it probably hit a little too close to home in regards to how people genuinely feel about an estranged parent(s). Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/29/23 Full Review Carolin D I enjoyed it. Was good. I am a fan of the in medias res flair. Solid film production, real good actors. Worth watching. Randy Myers San Jose Mercury News Raymond & Ray does have its moments, but it seems obsessed with trying to be different when it’s basically just warming up leftovers. Rated: 2/4 Oct 26, 2022 Full Review Kevin Maher Times (UK) The third act is clunky and disappointing, as both men coincidentally encounter women who have been crudely shoehorned into the narrative solely to smooth our boys’ furrowed brows and, well, to cure them. Rated: 3/5 Oct 26, 2022 Full Review Adam Graham Detroit News ... It never rings true, a portrait of grief afraid to confront itself in any real way. Rated: C- Oct 22, 2022 Full Review Prabhjot Bains Tilt Magazine Raymond & Ray succeeds as a cathartic and tender venture into gallows humour that charms just as much as it moves. It’s an insightful look at grief, reconciliation, and the empty, circus-like process of modern grieving. Nov 2, 2023 Full Review Damon Wise Deadline Hollywood Daily In the course of the film, each meets a woman who turns out to be sympathetic to their needs, a slightly schematic plot device that nevertheless works out thanks to the caliber of the cast. Sep 25, 2023 Full Review Ilan Preskovsky Channel24 (South Africa) it's perhaps not surprising that Rodrigo Garcia's Raymond and Ray is a really solid, intimate drama that is so very at home on the small screen.
