1980 isn't a placeholder by any means, but it suffers by its middle placement, lacking the newness of the first film or the cumulative satisfactions of the last. Go to Full Review

Stands as a wrenching tale of power abused and lives discarded. It is powerful stuff. Go to Full Review

Each film is enriched by collective detail, but it would have been richer had they played off each other rather than extending the argument. Go to Full Review

Made with considerable skill by Marsh, Red Riding: 1980 is the most simplistic in the trilogy narratively speaking, yet it still demands our attention throughout because of a lingering investment from the first film. Go to Full Review

Has an interesting and compelling atmosphere, and a stronger sense of human relationships than its counterparts, but it's also much more cold and impenetrable. Go to Full Review

Ted B. @Movieaddicted Oct 28 4.0 stars; What an excellent series. The first episode of the trilogy dealt with corruption outside of the law, i.e., the mob. Corruption inside the police station was only hinted at. This episode of the trilogy dealt with corruption inside the police station. An outside detective was brought into Yorkshire to investigate their high murder rate. In the process, he runs across the Yorkshire Ripper case and discovers that very little progress is being made in solving the case. What he discovers behind it leads to unspoken tragedy for him. Once again, leave it to the Brits to put together such a raw, yet high-quality and compelling series. See more Sep 7 Whilst the initial installment of Red Riding could be viewed as a standalone piece as well as a foundation for all that comes after, 1980 definitely feels like the continuation it is. The social commentary and claustrophobia were spot on, colliding with the wide, sweeping Yorkshire panoramics. The pacing of the story seemed off kilter at times, but that drives home the point - time waits for no-one. See more Glafira Regina O Feb 19 An incredibly dull film. The story itself is interesting, based on real events from the 1980s when Peter Sutcliffe, better known as the Yorkshire Ripper, was terrorizing Yorkshire. However, the director failed to deliver, and the script ended up being painfully slow and unengaging—90 minutes felt like three hours. It lacks the spirit of a true crime thriller and doesn’t have enough action to keep things exciting. See more Go 4 I Dec 22 I watched this because of the high Rotten ratings. Pretty simple story to tell about the good guy going up against police corruption and cover-ups. But this movie was full of disjointed story lines. I was waiting for these to be tied up to a greater degree. Even the end of the story was amateurish. A gun is fired by a third party and the murder weapon is placed in the hand of the guy being framed. What about gun shot residue on the hand of the supposed shooter? I expected better from a British film. BTW my first ever review. See more nilufer e @Nilicim 02/01/2021 This one was the most disconnected one I think. It was all about the new detective and his affair and duty etc. I felt I didn't even had to watch this one. See more 04/14/2020 A well written sequel with a somewhat satisfying conclusion that unfortunately got a bit slow around midway, causing me to lose focus at times. In all fairness I'd like to give this another try, in a different mood, as I was told this was the best of the trilogy, yet definitely thought 1974 the better myself. See more Read all reviews
