Paul Byrnes Sydney Morning Herald The film lurches forward in stops and starts, rather than with a smooth narrative flow. Still, there is great commitment and compassion here, a sense of life’s bitter absurdity. Rated: 3.5/5 Sep 29, 2022 Full Review Alissa Simon Variety Doherty displays winning confidence, visual imagination and stylistic bravura as he elevates a witty but foul-mouthed village comedy into something more provocative and universal. Feb 14, 2022 Full Review Simran Hans Observer (UK) There are only so many grim jokes to be wrung from a noose, but Irish writer-director Philip Doherty has a good go with this gloomy comedy. Rated: 3/5 Oct 3, 2021 Full Review Graeme Tuckett Stuff.co.nz While Redemption of a Rogue has some wonderful moments, it is also feels compiled from scenes that don't quite join up, or even quite tell us the same story. Rated: 2.5/5 Mar 23, 2023 Full Review Edward Porter Sunday Times (UK) As a story of emotional growth, the film slightly overreaches, but it's entertaining as a collection of odd characters, unpredictable events, funny ideas and melancholy songs. Rated: 3/5 Oct 3, 2021 Full Review Aine O'Connor Sunday Independent (Ireland) The film is full of ideas. It is also full of humour, from running jokes to visual gags. Mikey M Loved this movie. Didn't expect it to be as good as it was, highly recommend. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/24/24 Full Review Graham Y Quirky, darkly comic and resplendent with odd characters, this film was an unexpected surprise. The episodic scenes full of sharp, funny dialogue looked like Wes Anderson had been condemned to make a film in the Irish winter with all his pastel colours cleansed away by the endless rain. Well written and beautifully acted. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/30/23 Full Review margaret o What an unexpected delight. I just loved this crazy surreal film, beautifully scripted, cast and acted. A little piece of movie perfection Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review clare k Deadpan performances, great music, terrible weather! This film reminded me of Wes Anderson movies - weird, absurd but heartfelt. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review jonathan m This film tests the boundary of just how bleak a black comedy can be. It's as if the Irish director has said "Nobody does cynicism and sarcasm like the Irish, you just watch this!". Depressing watch with universally unlikeable characters, albeit quite well done but. I got a bit obsessed with Aisling O'Mara's accent - was she supposed to be be East European? Cetainly her odd accent suggested so, it was hard to tune into as a non-Irish person. Perhaps her name Masha was the clue. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Boring, almost like an Irish version of The Doors Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Read all reviews
