Critics Consensus

A ridiculous revenge story set to never deliver, this narratively inert would-be thriller will leave most viewers wishing they could Return to Sender.

Peter Sobczynski RogerEbert.com [It] seems to exist only to answer the unasked question "What would "I Spit on Your Grave" have been like if the main character had been Martha Stewart?" Rated: 0.5/4 Aug 14, 2015 Full Review Robert Abele Los Angeles Times Mikati never settles on whether he's steering an identity crisis drama or an exploitative vengeance fantasy. Aug 13, 2015 Full Review Neil Genzlinger New York Times For most of the way, "Return to Sender" merges creepy and sexy to good effect, thanks to a close-to-the-vest performance by Rosamund Pike, the missing wife of "Gone Girl." Aug 13, 2015 Full Review Angus Batey NME (New Musical Express) Return to Sender, starring Rosamund Pike, isn't quite what it seems... Rated: 2.5/5 May 18, 2021 Full Review Brigid Presecky FF2 Media Despite its occasional missteps, this hybrid of Gone Girl and Misery is bizarrely compelling. Rated: 4/5 Aug 16, 2019 Full Review Madeline Joint One Room With A View Even Rosamund Pike is recycling her performance, and she knows it; it's simply a Gone Girl rip off that will lose even the most forgiving viewer in the third act. Karlynne F Save yourself the trouble and DO NOT WATCH this film...it had potential, but in the end, it was just a waste of time. Okay, the lead is a Psychopath who murders people and animals, what's new? I wish the movie would have centred on Miranda avenging those who hurt her. Why did she kill the dog? I don't know...there's something to be said about unnecessary depictions of animal cruelty in films. What does that achieve? Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/14/24 Full Review Dani G She's good, she's innocent, she's strong... She's bad, very bad Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/03/24 Full Review Lynn M Unlike others who mentioned watching the [reveal all] Trailer before the film, I had not. This possibly lead to a greater appreciation for the film and surprising journey of Miranda, from what firs appeared to be a victim willing to forgive all, to the psychopath that she is. It was really a surprising twist for me. Had a I watched the trailer, any enjoyment as a viewer would have been spoiled. I found the film to be successfully eerie and the main characters were well-acted. The suspense was subtle and the revenge quite extreme. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/22/24 Full Review Hargie M Awful storyline. A very laughable ending Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/28/24 Full Review Stephen Awful. Awful storyline. Awful acting. The actor who played the victims father was dreadful. The best actor was the dog who sadly died. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/27/24 Full Review Donald S Oddly Compelling, Pike was mesmerising. The outline was there for a movie, but the abrupt rushed ending undoes the slow buildup. The film couldn't work out if it was a PTSD drama or revenge movie. The ending left more questions than answers. If it took less time getting to the point, and more time with the twist itself and her dark side and her motivations for doing the things she did, there would actually be tension rather than the laughable ending.
