James B Despite powerful acting and polished direction, Revolutionary Road cannot overcome its mundane and unfocused plot. Set in the 1950s, it tells the story of Frank and April Wheeler (Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet), a couple who appear to have the perfect suburban life. Beneath the surface, though, is a yearning for something more meaningful. This film about longing and loss highlights the quiet despair that can grow between two people, even those who love each other deeply. The tragedy lies in broken dreams and unspoken fears amid the crushing weight of societal expectations. The Wheelers try to escape the conformity around them, and their story unravels into heartbreak. The movie is hauntingly slow-paced, with frequent, prolonged silences between characters. You have to be in the right mood to watch this movie. If you liked Requiem for a Dream, you'll likely love this one. The story is a simple everyday tale of an ambitious couple with a young family, but told in an extremely honest and thought provoking way. The acting is superb and the pacing, although steady, is just right. The locations and cinematography are excellent, as is the subtle but purposeful musical score. The whole movie comes togeather so gracefully to take the viewer almost unaware on a compelling and sometimes frightening rollercoaster ride of emotions. It firmly held my attention throughout it's near 2 hour runtime, which seemed to pass much more quickly. I really appreciated this film and thoroughly recommend it.
