Sobering offering for Best Foreign Language film from Guatemala. Based on the true story of abuse and subsequent riot at a girl’s orphanage in Virgen de Asuncion in 2017, ultimately killing forty-one girls between the ages of 14 and 17. Told through a magical lens, the cinematography is a treat.

Guatemala. After escaping her abusive father, a 13-year-old girl is imprisoned in an orphanage run by the government. She joins a tribe of girls wearing feathered wings who share the belief that an angel will release them from the claws of the oppressive system. Based on actual events, "Rita" examines the struggles of neglected children and the fallibility of the system that was expected to protect them. The movie is a dark-fantasy tale exposing real-world horrors that, in any circumstances, should be ignored. Trully heartbreaking!
