What to Know

Critics Consensus

It's inspired by epic real-life events, but rich cinematography and the best of intentions aren't enough to carry Robert the Bruce past its leaden pace and bland storytelling.

Angie Han FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) I liked it. I didn't think it completely worked, but I appreciated what it was trying to do. Apr 24, 2020 Full Review Owen Gleiberman Variety Directed by Richard Gray, "Robert the Bruce" feels like a producer's movie - a somber package, with elements all lined up that don't fully come to life. Apr 24, 2020 Full Review Nell Minow RogerEbert.com Robert the Bruce is gorgeously filmed by cinematographer John Garrett, making the most of every exquisitely lit crag of the Scottish countryside. Rated: 3/4 Apr 24, 2020 Full Review Calum Cooper Source (Scotland) Instead of how this common Scottish family reawakened Bruce’s spirit, it comes across more like how Bruce mended this family, which feels counterproductive to what the film was aiming for. Rated: 2/5 Jul 14, 2024 Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com ...while the film runs too long, its meditates in a compelling way on how the Bruce found his sense of purpose in the needs of his own people.... Rated: 4/5 Jan 23, 2024 Full Review James Hanton Outtake Mag It is not quite as stirring as it wants to be, but Gray's picture brims with passion and is still as accomplished as any historical drama worth watching. Rated: 4 / 5 Jul 28, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews

Duncan F I usually love historic Scottish/medieval dramas, but this slow moving, obviously low budget affair is tiresome as it spends most of the movie time, wallowing on the care the main character experiences from a poor rural family (and beautiful young lady) before he musters an army to take back Scotland. That is, you never see the big event, get a full scope of what the historic battle meant for Scotland or details of how it happens. Disappointing waste of an evening. Better to rewatch Braveheart again. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/02/25 Full Review Jonelle B Absolutely loved it. Great acting. Great script. Wonderful cast. Historical and compelling. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/13/24 Full Review Mutantti M Good acting, great music, got me somewhat invested in the characters, made me feel a bit. Too long, occasionally dragging, veery light on the action department, and would like little more Bruce on the screen. Onewatchmovie 6+/10 Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/31/24 Full Review Nathan C What a sad, slow, depressing movie. And you don't even get to see Bruce reclaim the throne. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/19/23 Full Review Thomas S It is a slow film. But a deeply moving story. As to should you watch it? If you love Andor, yes. If you love Rise of Skywalker , no. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/05/23 Full Review Y C Robert the Bruce is severely lacking in Bruce. Doesn't have a lot of Robert in it either. Could be called story about family Robert the Bruce once looked at. What Robert the Bruce does have is lots of strong independent medieval women, interior shots of stone buildings and beautiful snowy landscapes. The film should have been called 'single mother finds man in snow' Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/01/23 Full Review Read all reviews
