Steve D The cast does their best but it is too much like a million others. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/21/24 Full Review Audience Member Very reminiscent of Casablanca in the character development, but a much more brutal and realistic film, good performance all around, some really good close up shots of Burt, looking very handsome Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/09/23 Full Review paul d William Deterle's Rope of Sand is an adventure drama set in a South African diamond region. It's a well-done, if workmanlike, film. Even if the movie's femme fatale, played well by Corinne Calvet, has a lot of screen time and an important role in the plot, she serves mainly to drive the key narrative of the film, the rivalry of the three characters played by Burt Lancaster, Paul Heinreid and Claude Rains. Lancaster and Rains are playing to type and are a joy to watch, with Heinreid turning in a strong performance as a very nasty police chief. I found it a bit unsettling that much of the crew, many vehicles and sets were the same as producer Hal Wallis had used seven years earlier in Casablanca.
