I am enough of a realist to realize that adults probably had to come into this plot at one point or another, but the adults, unfortunately, bring grown-up movie cliches along with them, and that spoils some of the fun.

This movie is EXCELLENT. Placing this movie in 1987, when it was, allows for a fuller appreciation. I watched this in the theater back then. It was/is not only accessible to younger viewers, it is very entertaining with good moral underpinnings.

Cute, enjoyable movie reminiscent of The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming from the 60s and other kids get together to save the day 80s movies such as Goonies, E.T., and Explorers (which featured River Phoenix). Pure, wholesome entertainment with a great message of Glasnost.
