Critics Consensus

While hard-hitting and violently inventive, Safe ultimately proves too formulaic to set itself apart from the action thriller pack -- including some of its star's better films.

Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com The mechanics make sense, what's going on fits within the confines of the narrative structure, making what's going on within both surprisingly fun and shockingly engaging. Rated: 3/4 May 15, 2012 Full Review David Stratton At the Movies (Australia) Like so many action films these days the film is over-edited and under-plotted, and we've seen Statham's tough guy character many times before. Rated: 2.5/5 May 10, 2012 Full Review Nick Schager Slant Magazine It's the imposing Statham's badass grimace and combat acumen that primarily elevate Safe above your average direct-to-video genre work Rated: 2.5/4 May 9, 2012 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Action junkies should be pleased. Rated: 3/4 Nov 20, 2022 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies A sharply directed action picture that builds on a really strong performance from Statham all the way to its bullet-ridden finale. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 25, 2022 Full Review Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand ... delivers an unexpectedly dense, speedy, tight action thriller that is full of rapid-fire street action, makes great use of Statham’s physical poise, and features a body count big enough to make a dent in the New York City census results. Dylan H This film follows Luke Wright, an ex-cop turned cage fighter who becomes the target of the Russian mob after refusing to throw a fixed match. On the run and with nothing left to lose, he crosses paths with Mei, a young math prodigy with a photographic memory who holds in her mind a secret numerical code tied to a powerful and highly coveted safe. Pursued by the same Russian mob, the Chinese Triads, and corrupt members of the New York City Police Department—each willing to kill for the code—Luke takes it upon himself to protect Mei and the secrets she carries, while fighting back and seeking revenge on those who destroyed his life. Overall, due to brutal fights and explosive shootouts (memorable moments in a fairly good but otherwise forgettable, run-of-the-mill picture), a gripping and high-stakes story (although the main beats are familiar in this genre and most Statham pictures feel samey, this one has a uniquely interesting plot), the dynamic and heartwarming companionship between Luke and Mei (two completely different characters whose personalities mesh seamlessly, quickly evolving from strangers to friends and, eventually, a makeshift family), and Chan’s impressive and nuanced performance as Mei (a strong debut that defies typical expectations, holding her own against a veteran like Statham while carrying both emotional and comedic scenes), this movie is pretty good, and although I wasn’t a huge fan of the pacing—mainly due to jumpy editing between story beats and tonal shifts, especially early on—and found the ending anticlimactic and somewhat unsatisfying (perhaps intentionally humorous, but it didn’t quite land for me), I still enjoyed my time with this feature. It’s a quick, fun, and entertaining picture that, while not exceptional or grandiose in filmmaking, delivers a satisfying, turn-your-brain-off experience.
