      What to know

      Critics Consensus

While hard-hitting and violently inventive, Safe ultimately proves too formulaic to set itself apart from the action thriller pack -- including some of its star's better films. Read critic reviews

Safe is your typical Jason Statham movie but with steroids. If you have seen any of his newer films, then this movie will not surprise you. But like most of his films, Safe is a nice throwback to the heyday 80's action films. This film simply offers up a good time as we see Statham get involved with the Chinese and the Russians. The stunts are pretty good here as well as the cinematography since we see some cool shots of the action. Boaz Yakin's film is about a former New York detective who protects a young Chinese girl from the fore-mentioned ethnic groups because she has something both sides want and they will go to war over this. Jason Statham is Jason Statham in this film. He does nothing but kick butt and show people why he is not to be trifled with. He is getting better as an actor and is beginning to show some more emotional maturity. Overall, this is a solid action film that while it delivers nothing new, it still delivers the goods. It has everything an action junkie could want from good choreography to corrupt policemen. Essentially, if you don't like Jason Statham you won't like this film. But, I believe this is a good action film. I rate this film 4 1/2 stars 3-04-14

After failing to take a dive in a fighting match which costs Russian mobsters about a million dollars, they kill Luke Wright's(Jason Statham) wife while leaving him alive, telling him they will kill anybody who gets even remotely close to him again which includes a man he gives his shoes to at a homeless shelter. After that, he feels he has no choice but to give up, intending to throw himself in front of a train at the Dekalb Avenue Station. But then he notices Mei(Catherine Chan) in jeopardy. At the age of 11, she was brought to the United States by Han(James Hong) for her prodigious memory in keeping track of his illegal enterprises without leaving a paper trail. The last number she memorized has not only the Chinese mobsters after her, but also Russians, corrupt cops and probably PETA, too. Even while it takes "Safe" a while to get going to introduce most of its dramatis personae(and it still leaves one important character out until very late in the game) and therefore about thirty minutes before Jason Statham gets to hit somebody, it wastes little time and moves swiftly in cutting between the various storylines with a little nasty ingenuity added in. And once the plot does kick in, the movie still moves nicely throughout, with a fine sense of New York City geography. But while it is certainly polite for all the bad guys to know each other beforehand, it is also more than a little convenient.(For the conspiratorially minded, one could argue that Robert John Burke is playing the same corrupt cop here that he also plays on "Person of Interest.") And just as much, the movie never quite settles firmly on who exactly Luke is supposed to be.

        Decent action flick.

I'd definitely say I enjoyed this movie in spite of the story being completely generic and formulaic. I liked the action sequences, they were definitely hard-hitting and violent, but there's something about the film that was odd. I find it hard to explain but the film never really changed as far as tone goes. It simply stays at the same level that it starts at. I just feel that nothing in the film really changes, it all feels the same to me. Again, I find it very hard to explain but it was hard to truly get into the film since it didn't really build to an epic climax. Still this is a solid rental, it's a fun action film. Nothing more, nothing less
