Although Samaritan is better than it could have been, this Stallone-led superhero drama is creatively underpowered.

Brad Newsome Sydney Morning Herald This long-delayed Sylvester Stallone movie is a surprisingly agreeable blend of ultraviolent ’80s action flick and grim, dark 21st-century superhero fantasy. Sep 1, 2022 Full Review Randy Myers San Jose Mercury News It’s an enjoyable, paint-by-numbers PG-13 action film. Nothing more. Rated: 2.5/5 Sep 1, 2022 Full Review Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times This might be a one-and-done effort, but I wouldn’t mind seeing an expansion of the Greater Samaritan County. Rated: 3/4 Aug 30, 2022 Full Review Lee Zumpe Tampa Bay Newspapers It’s not Stallone’s fault “Samaritan” doesn’t rise above its lumbering mediocrity until the last 30 minutes of the film. Oct 26, 2023 Full Review Christopher Connor Movie Marker Magazine It is a shame that the tone and pacing of the film let down some of its stronger elements with a rushed conclusion and some questionable narrative decisions, with a first act that sits uneasily with the rest of the film. Rated: 2/5 Aug 7, 2023 Full Review Manuel São Bento FirstShowing.net Samaritan holds quite an interesting premise, but sadly, it's yet another addition to the list of films with wasted potential. A tad frustrating in retrospect. Rated: C- Jul 25, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Jacob B I feel like a dumbass for not seeing the plot twist coming despite people seeing it as obvious. That plot twist honestly gave this film a bit more energy to it with some actually decent action because, on the whole, Samaritan was a rather dull superhero film. I get that its heavier focus on drama in a grounded world that just happens to have a superhero in it was trying to attract a similar crowd as Unbreakable but the way it's handled here lacks what made that film so compelling. The dynamic between Stallone and this 13-year-old isn't that interesting, it feels like two different films competing for attention (one about a young boy getting involved with a criminal gang to help his mother pay the rent and another about him becoming buddies with a reclusive superhero who faked his death), the de-aging CGI on Stallone in a flashback makes him look like a character model from a video game (and you people give Marvel flak for digital de-aging) and, once again, this film is kinda boring. You can probably blame that on the film's big selling point of Sylvester Stallone starring in a superhero movie despite not being as unique a hook as Amazon thinks it is when you take into consideration his cameo in the GOTG sequels, his contributions to The Suicide Squad and, most importantly, his role as the titular character in Judge Dredd. That gimmick might cause some to believe that it was going to be Rambo with a cape but this wasn't the case. At least the main villain was entertaining to watch. Also, for a film that cost $100 million and was intended to be released theatrically, it sure doesn't have much of a cinematic look and feel to it. It's hard for me to take the villain speech that seriously when it seems like only a few dozen people are there rather than a large crowd. Why even waste your time coming up with a fictitious name for your comic-inspired city when there's nothing particularly distinctive about it? It's enough to make me miss '90s comic book movies because even if the execution wasn't always the best, they at least had some really great art direction that helped bring their worlds to life. Samaritan is not visually interesting. Or even just interesting for that matter. It's, like how I feel about this review of mine, a nothingburger of a movie that has a few interesting ideas that it doesn't know how to discuss in a meaningful manner and is partially salvaged by its plot twist that made me wish it was revealed halfway through the film rather than in the climax. That way, we could've gotten a more interesting superhero drama that would be worthy of following in Unbreakable's footsteps. Maybe the in-development sequel will be an improvement, only time will tell. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/23/25 Full Review Audience Member Average storyline. Not that interesting. Trying too hard. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/09/25 Full Review Nolan W. Really decent superhero movie, nice to see new characters. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/02/25 Full Review Dean G Just dull. Not worth your time. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/25/25 Full Review Igor S As a huge Stallone fan, i wanted to love this. Unfortunately, the script looks like it was written by a 12 year old, while playing with his action toys. If you can ignore that(and the few cringe moments here and there), it might be worth to watch and pass some time. Just don't expect much from a movie that is clearly trying to capitalize on the superhero genre. They did give it a nice twist at the end tho, so props for that. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/30/25 Full Review Rocky S This movie is so DARK you can't see what's going on !!! The director didn't pay the light bill or what ? Totaly ruined the movie.
