Although Samaritan is better than it could have been, this Stallone-led superhero drama is creatively underpowered.

Brad Newsome Sydney Morning Herald This long-delayed Sylvester Stallone movie is a surprisingly agreeable blend of ultraviolent ’80s action flick and grim, dark 21st-century superhero fantasy. Sep 1, 2022 Full Review Randy Myers San Jose Mercury News It’s an enjoyable, paint-by-numbers PG-13 action film. Nothing more. Rated: 2.5/5 Sep 1, 2022 Full Review Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times This might be a one-and-done effort, but I wouldn’t mind seeing an expansion of the Greater Samaritan County. Rated: 3/4 Aug 30, 2022 Full Review Lee Zumpe Tampa Bay Newspapers It’s not Stallone’s fault “Samaritan” doesn’t rise above its lumbering mediocrity until the last 30 minutes of the film. Oct 26, 2023 Full Review Christopher Connor Movie Marker Magazine It is a shame that the tone and pacing of the film let down some of its stronger elements with a rushed conclusion and some questionable narrative decisions, with a first act that sits uneasily with the rest of the film. Rated: 2/5 Aug 7, 2023 Full Review Manuel São Bento FirstShowing.net Samaritan holds quite an interesting premise, but sadly, it's yet another addition to the list of films with wasted potential. A tad frustrating in retrospect. Rated: C- Jul 25, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Jay W "Samaritan" is not a great film, but I don't dislike it. It has a unique charm that only someone like Stallone can deliver. There's a certain irony of Stallone playing a superhero, considering he credited Batman '89 with stalling his career. He has been in a few Superhero movies already, "Judge Dredd", "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" and "The Suicide Squad". But this superhero picture is so distinctly Sly's style. In this film, Stallone stars as "Joe Smith" a mild-mannered garbage man. When a young boy named Sam, played by Javon Walton, gets in over his head, Smith comes to the rescue. Sam is then convinced that Joe may be a long lost superhero. Starting with the positives, Stallone and Walton have very believable chemistry together. It was a smart move to focus on a more vulnerable character, since it is harder to fear for Stallone's near invincible Joe Smith. I also like the world they set up. Granite City looks like the type of crazy crime ridden world set up in RoboCop, Mad Max or modern-day Chicago. The city is always dirty, raining and covered in garbage. When Stallone goes full action hero, dispatching enemies left and right, spouting off one-liners, it's hard not to be having some fun. On the negative side this is a pretty inconsistent movie. Some characters make decisions that don't make any sense. They go through the trouble of explaining a weakness for Smith, but the weakness only seems to kick in when it is convenient to the screenplay. As such, it is hard to gage if he is any real peril. Maybe if they would have given his character a video game style health bar in the top corner, I could have felt the suspense. This movie does have the burden a lot of action movies seem to bog themselves down with...they throw in a kid. The adventures of the 13-year old are not as engaging as the writers think. This kid is no John Conners. The villains are hilariously over the top. All the barrels will explode. All bad guys will flip when they get shot. Every kill will be followed by a pun. This movie has the feel of the Cannon films of the 80's. This would be right at home next to "Over the Top" and "Death Wish 3". If you are a fan of that type of cheese, then this film should be "Good Enough Samaritan" for you. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/02/24 Full Review Vic V It’s not bad. Passable as a slow Sunday watch. Typical round-of-the-mill characters & storyline. The action scenes were surprisingly bland. But watchable. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/02/24 Full Review Shane O Good character building at the beginning. It lost pace as it got into the film , the final fight scene totally lost me didn’t really make much sense. But over all worth a watch Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/01/24 Full Review Jeffrey P An alternative superhero film that adds truth and does justice to the trope without needing the Marvel or DC brand attached to embolden it. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/08/24 Full Review PISICA B It's a good movie that is worth watching. If you have very high expectations you won't be amazed by it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/30/24 Full Review Read all reviews
