      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Although Samaritan is better than it could have been, this Stallone-led superhero drama is creatively underpowered.

      Audience Consensus

Anchored by a solid Stallone performance, Samaritan puts a refreshingly grizzled spin on the superhero movie formula.

Audience Member Would have been 4 stars but the climax is a tad too ridiculous when you put into account how long you can actually stomach being in a burning building, even with the ridiculous standards created here, some things in the 3rd act are a bit much for me. I love Sly and his natural bad assery he brings to every role he does now. So I’m just a sucker for all he does today, as a superhero nerd, I was all for the antics. The action and butt kicking is what you’d expect from a street level brawler and he does go rage mode! The rest of the cast is ok, I do buy into the relationship between Joe and Sam and the rest of the cast is given just the right amount of screen time. Things I didn’t like was that the motivations of some characters aren’t quite clear, like Cyrus just wants to cause chaos bc of generic “the world doesn’t care about us” reasons, and the city being in the state is in is such a quandary like Gotham City, like why is that bad and yet other cities around it seem to be having different problems. I digress, I think there’s a bit too much of exposition and not enough Samaritan lore. I want more lore dammit! With a sequel in the works, I’m excited to see more, hell I’d even be down for a prequel because of how everything got there is just as interesting a story as any. This kind of a superhero is perfect for Sly and I’m here for it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/27/24 Full Review Andres M Final third of the movie is where all the action lives if you're an action fan, but otherwise it's a bit of a bore. Everything is so generic - the writing, the names, settings, etc. The twist is immediately obvious within the first few minutes. And the kid actors in this are all so bad. Doesn't Bang; 2.5/5 When Can Georgie Watch?: It's a pretty plain movie but we'll put it off as long as possible. I don't need him to think this is part of the mainstream superhero movie space. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/21/23 Full Review Marcus E Look, this movie was entertaining. You have to suspend belief. Despite the bad CGI, body doubles, unrealistic fight scenes and happenings, not to mention the clear copying of 'other' superhero movies, it was good. I would watch part two of it comes out. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/16/23 Full Review Allen B It really was a decent movie. Yes it was cheesy. Yes, a bit cliche, but you don't see the twist coming. Since it was free Amazon, it is a good watch. A little Last Action Heroish but all in all, a good story. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/27/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Brad Newsome Sydney Morning Herald This long-delayed Sylvester Stallone movie is a surprisingly agreeable blend of ultraviolent ’80s action flick and grim, dark 21st-century superhero fantasy. Sep 1, 2022 Full Review Randy Myers San Jose Mercury News It’s an enjoyable, paint-by-numbers PG-13 action film. Nothing more. Rated: 2.5/5 Sep 1, 2022 Full Review Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times This might be a one-and-done effort, but I wouldn’t mind seeing an expansion of the Greater Samaritan County. Rated: 3/4 Aug 30, 2022 Full Review Lee Zumpe Tampa Bay Newspapers It’s not Stallone’s fault “Samaritan” doesn’t rise above its lumbering mediocrity until the last 30 minutes of the film. Oct 26, 2023 Full Review Christopher Connor Movie Marker Magazine It is a shame that the tone and pacing of the film let down some of its stronger elements with a rushed conclusion and some questionable narrative decisions, with a first act that sits uneasily with the rest of the film. Rated: 2/5 Aug 7, 2023 Full Review Manuel São Bento FirstShowing.net Samaritan holds quite an interesting premise, but sadly, it's yet another addition to the list of films with wasted potential. A tad frustrating in retrospect. Rated: C- Jul 25, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews
