Jordyne Blaise The Atlantic 06/06/2019
Sandra Bland was a woman who thought deeply about broader issues of racial justice and offered plans to address them. It's unfortunate that this documentary could not do the same. Despite that, it is worth watching. Go to Full Review

It keeps Bland's life and her commitment to fighting racial injustice front and center, ensuring she always remains a person rather than a glorified symbol. Go to Full Review

More than anything, the value in Say Her Name lies in its refusal to allow Bland to be silenced, even in death. Go to Full Review

Certain moments either diminish the intellectual arguments at the core of the film or serve to further prove Bland was once here and now a specter looming over a never-ending, polarizing ongoing national conversation on racism and policing in America. Go to Full Review

[It] works on multiple levels: as a quest for truth set in the real world, a portrait of a burgeoning civil rights activist cut down in her prime, and as a snapshot of the country at a time of highly volatile racial tensions. Go to Full Review

A documentary on the case Say Her Name: The Life and Death of Sandra Bland... puts a face on the Black Lives Matter struggles and is enhanced by her many encouraging (and not necessarily anti-cop) messages on her video blog. Go to Full Review

06/23/2020 Seemed very sympathetic to the Waller county Sherrif and court. Nothing they said was challenged. Could have been so much more powerful. Also, there was no analysis of the cop's behavior or any of racist the language used to describe her "aggressive, arrogant, etc." They also continued to let the accusation stand that she assaulted the cop as the "reason" she was even in jail. Why did not one person challenge the Waller police with the video of the cop assaulting HER? Also, if the cop had to make a U-turn to follow her and then pull her over, and she never changes lanes after that point...how did the cop see her change a lane from the other side of the street going the other direction? De escalation training should be mandatory in all forms of law enforcement and security. I feel like the negative audience reviews on here may be relational to persons involved with her death. See more 06/09/2019 i guess we're supposed to be shocked at the possibility that she didn't take her own life, but with all the hyper-sensitivity about police brutality I am sure every effort was made to make sure she was not helped on her way. Still it is a sad thing to take your life. See more 12/09/2018 A jailhouse suicide made to look like a murder. Reach. See more Read all reviews
