Free spirited and cheerful Arkie (Jillian Nguyen) lives with her adoptive octopus father, Blister (Rob Collins), on a flourishing, colorful peninsula. Together they help regenerate plant life using their magical tentacles, with the help of friendly mechanical bees powered by sunrays. The best family movies awaken the adult in the child and the child in the adult. This one mistakes colour for creativity, pumping its surface full of vim and vigour but letting the writing wither on the vine.

With allowances made for a limited budget, any random five minutes of Scarygirl would look good on an animator’s showreel. Soon, though, I began to wonder how far the many creative contributors were ever on the same page.

Saw this on Blu-Ray (a gift from a friend) and was really surprised at how beautiful it looked. The characters were different to what I've seen on other animated films. It was also a very positive film and I related to the message of managing expectations from your parents.

Refreshingly original! A wonderful and visually stunning movie based on the illustrations, comics and vinyl toy designs of the great Nathan Jurevicious. It delivers a fantastic story with remarkably unique characters. It has Nathan's fingerprints and sensibilities all over it. Quite an inspiring achievement!

My kids and I loved watching this Australian animated film. The characters were fun and the gorgeous worlds created were amazing! My son particularly loved Bunniguru. Highly recommend.

The designs were beautiful and original. I don't think I've seen a 3D animated film like this before. The story was engaging and I didn't guess the outcome of the antagonist. Hope there's a spin-off to learn more about the world.

Overall, Scarygirl introduces many creative characters and stunningly beautiful worlds. The sci-fi and fantasy aspects reminded me of films such as Mad God and A.I. Artificial Intelligence. The voice cast throughout is surprising and terrific, and the animation style, like the characters, is creative and fascinating. I found the start of this film and its story slightly uneven and strange, but as I progressed, I couldn't help but be drawn in. Arkie's journey and major reveals in the finale felt unpredictable, leaving me feeling rewarded as the credits rolled.
