Filmmaker Ali Tabrizi initially set out to celebrate his beloved ocean, but instead found himself examining the harm that humans inflict upon the vulnerable seas. From plastics and fishing gear polluting the waters, to the irreparable damage of bottom trawling and by-catch, to illegal fishing and devastating hunting practices, humanity is wreaking havoc on marine life and, by extension, the entire planet. What Tabrizi ultimately uncovered not only challenges notions of sustainable fishing but will shock anyone who cares about the wonders of ocean life, as well as the future of the planet and our place on it. Freddie Hayward New Statesman While these may at first appear to be a harmless stylistic choice, the hurried coverage of each subject means the film fails to capture the full story. Apr 13, 2021 Full Review Charlotte Cripps Independent (UK) It's hard to stomach... But if there's one thing Seaspiracy doesn't want it's for us to switch off and give up. There is hope. Rated: 4/5 Mar 30, 2021 Full Review Natalia Winkelman New York Times Even the film's notable points seem to emerge only briefly before sinking beneath the surface, lost in a sea of murky conspiratorial thinking. Mar 24, 2021 Full Review JK Sooja Common Sense Media A devastating indictment of commercial fishing, this whistleblower documentary is stunning, tragic, emotional, and difficult to watch. Rated: 4/5 Apr 5, 2021 Full Review Emma Stefansky Thrillist Seaspiracy is both well-researched and informative, and at times genuinely shocking... If shock and awe are what it takes to get the message across, then Seaspiracy is effective, if not particularly multifaceted. Mar 30, 2021 Full Review Graeme Tuckett Stuff.co.nz Seaspiracy makes a pretty good case, that unless we change our behaviour soon, the entire fishing industry will have collapsed by 2050. Sarah K Great documentary! A must watch! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/18/24 Full Review Wing Yin C A great wake up call that change my views on sea animals Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/28/23 Full Review Audience Member This was put together amazingly and I believe everyone needs to watch this before it is too late. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review S A V A N N A H K Highly informative and the facts are woven into the story quite seamlessly. The documentary spreads awareness of the environmental injustices of the ocean today that were not seen and previously spoken about. This is definitely an eye opening must-see. But brace yourself, there is graphic footage that is very heartbreaking. It definitely is the documentary that makes you ask yourself, 'what can I do to help?'. I think spreading awareness is the first step to change and it helps us and inspires us all to become involved. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/10/22 Full Review Grant G This movie is very well done. Goes into all the details regarding the fishing industry and provide a lot of evidence to their claim. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/07/22 Full Review Peter A Seaspiracy is a movie that exposes the large fishing corporations and the cruel, wasteful methods used on fishing boats at sea. With a narrative that takes the filmmakers all over the world, the viewers get to experience and discover this conspiracy in real time with the creators. It never shies away in showing the audience everything they can, explaining the various issues like overfishing, shark fin soup consumption, and plastic in the ocean. Most shocking is the conditions on these boats, the amount of wasted catch being almost unbelievable. Where the movie may start to get complicated, it always remembers to explain clearly to the audience, with simple graphs and narration that makes sense of what is on screen. Overall, Seaspiracy is an essential watch for anyone who cares about the environment and the massive impact humanity has had on it. The way that companies are advertising themselves and ocean friendly when they are anything but is just wrong and it should make any viewer more mindful of what they consume.
