Successful Music Video director Pasqual Gutierrez is faced with a dilemma on the due date of his first-born child: a job offer for his biggest video yet. Frustrated with his poor work/life balance, Gutierrez casts a doppelgänger named Miguel to take over his work duties in his director duo Cliqua as he prepares to take an extended paternity leave. But as Pasqual starts to spend more time with Miguel to teach him how to step into this new role, Pasqual's relationship and his work suffer, ending with a disastrous music video shoot. Katie Rife IndieWire Luckily, they’re all charismatic people who are used to the presence of cameras, so they feel natural on screen. More importantly, however, this dynamic channels real offscreen tensions into onscreen confrontations, which lends an emotional reality. Rated: B+ Feb 9, 2025 Full Review Siddhant Adlakha Variety Remarkable naturalism and immense absurdity sit shoulder-to-shoulder. However, as notable as this tension may be, the novelty of the movie’s tonal dissonance eventually wears out, thanks to a story of swapped identities with no real end goal in mind. Feb 3, 2025 Full Review Robert Daniels RogerEbert.com The humor in “Serious People” is often too dry and too inside baseball to resonate. Jan 30, 2025 Full Review Louisa Moore Screen Zealots This ambitious indie has a creative premise, but never seems to hit the right note. Feb 27, 2025 Full Review Stephen Saito Moveable Fest By keeping their own focus tight and manageable, Gutierrez and Mullinkosson show there are benefits of not trying to do it all on their incisive feature debut. Feb 24, 2025 Full Review Will Bjarnar Next Best Picture In the words of Kendrick Lamar — perhaps not how he meant them, but interpreted literally — these people are not like us. Neither are the characters in “Serious People,” but viewers are better off for it than they would be with simpler, less gonzo fare. Rated: 6/10 Feb 6, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews
