12/18/2018 Surprisingly funny and bawdy farce. Mariel Hemingway is an underappreciated actress. Well worth a look. See more 08/03/2014 You know, sexuality is a complex and important subject that deserves to be talked about with intelligence and insight. So when a film comes along that trivializes it to such a loathsome and sleazy degree, it's unforgivable. The Sex Monster is such a film. It is a comedy about a husband and wife who bring another women into their bed at the behest of the husband, but the wife discovers that she enjoys it quite a bit more than either of them anticipated. The concept is an very interesting one that might have led to a movie with some insight into sexuality and modern day marriage. Unfortunately The Sex Monster has no idea what it's talking about, treating it's subject with absolute disrespect. It is also unfunny, slightly homophobic, and filled with manipulative, terrible people. Mariel Hemingway is the film's only saving grace, as she is very likable. But her character is an insult to bisexual people. As soon as she discovers her attraction to women, she does a complete personality shift and becomes predatory and starts sneaking around behind her husband's back. And he doesn't come off in a good light either because he's completely manipulative and unsupportive of his wife. All of this is done in the guise of an unfunny farcical comedy. As it turns out, The Sex Monster is not a comedy about sexuality, it is an attempt to laugh and leer at women with opposite-sex attraction. An absolutely terrible film, avoid it completely.
