      Critics Consensus

Serene and slow-moving, this turgid, unimpressive and inconsequential British period piece lacks any real drama.

Steve D Simmons shows she can still get the job done and done well. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/03/24 Full Review Audience Member Meditative family drama about healing old wounds as the family's matriarch is approaching her sunset. Jean Simmons, terribly feeble-she passed away less than a year after the film's release, gives a gentle but resolute performance. Nice that she could make her final bow above the title of a film that while it's not a masterpiece is a respectable showcase for her great often under-appreciated talent. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Så den ene og alene pga Jamie Dornan sukk. Helt ok. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Sentimental and possibly slow but a great film to watch on a long summer night. Make no bones about the sentimentality and pace of the film but it is a chill pill and worth a watch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Indeed slow but penetrative... Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member Moody but way too laid-back, sloppy muddled, fragmented & loosely constructed. Jamie Dornan's shallow acting further puzzles what is his supposed-to-be significant character really about. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Tim Robey Daily Telegraph (UK) Tiny things happen oversignificantly in this indulgent British effort set in 1960s. Rated: 2/5 Jun 5, 2009 Full Review Derek Malcolm London Evening Standard Shadows in the Sun unfurls as quietly as a mouse and could be accused of lacking urgency and bite. But it is well played. Jun 5, 2009 Full Review Dave Calhoun Time Out A serene amble through an inoffensive landscape. Rated: 2/5 Jun 5, 2009 Full Review Caroline Jowett Daily Express (UK) Shadows is an understated tale that could have used a little more fire but Simmons' presence helps to make it touching. Jun 5, 2009 Full Review Sam Jordison Film4 A worthy entry on Jean Simmons' impressive CV - and hopefully not the last. Shadows In The Sun might not be Spartacus but it does have a charm of its own. Rated: 4/5 Jun 5, 2009 Full Review Rob Daniel Sky Cinema Heartfelt and well-behaved, this slight story of a divorced man attempting a reconciliation with his prickly mum is gracefully watchable, but resistant to embrace any actual drama.
