A young couple, Shaina and Mark, attend a music festival with their best friend Elijah on their annual pilgrimage away from their work-heavy city lives. It's also something of a farewell trip for the couple because they are expecting, though they haven't told Elijah, yet. Their plan is to tell him at that beautiful cabin they found on a vacation rental app. Upon arrival the host is nowhere to be found, but she has left instructions for them on the door along with a gift basket of wine. Everything is perfect except the faint smell of death that only the pregnant Shaina can smell. After a visit by two beautiful women, Shaina quickly becomes suspicious -- things just don't add up. When Elijah disappears, she and Mark begin to search frantically for their friend, only to discover that they're being hunted by figures wearing skinned animal masks.

MontiLee Stormer MovieReelist.com Shady Grove suffers from dialogue and pacing issues. Everyone else recites lines that sound like lines. It’s directed like a stage play with rigid blocking considering the material everyone is given to work with feels like recited dialogue. Rated: 2/5 Nov 23, 2022 Full Review Ben Bradley Starburst Mixing elements of folk horror and home invasion tropes, Shady Grove is an entertaining enough tale that hits the right spots when it needs to. Rated: 3/5 Nov 3, 2022 Full Review Jennie Kermode Eye for Film With a nice supporting turn from Becki Hayes as the local sheriff, this is a film whose secrets lie as much in what we don’t see as what we do. Rated: 2.5/5 Oct 26, 2022 Full Review Nathaniel Muir AIPT Takes too long to get going, and once it does, has to rush to make up for lost time. Attempts to create trust issues between the two leads never work as they are brought up and dropped constantly. Would have been fine as a straightforward horror film. Oct 24, 2022 Full Review Roger Moore Movie Nation The filmmakers are more invested in sex-in-the-shower scenes and cute banter than the perfunctory killing to come. Dale J The script and writing seemed so-so, but the direction brought the elements and overall tone back together. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/28/24 Full Review Melissa L Creepy, and a lot like Midsommer...and I hated that movie. I wouldn't recommend it. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/16/24 Full Review Jenny C If you enjoy horror then you must see this film. I am not generally into the horror though SHADY GROVE was a great balance of suspense, special effects, incredible cinematography/scenery, music, comedy, sexiness!!! Produced by Niki McElroy who impresses me more and more each day. Like what doesn't she do?! The performances were stellar and it looks like the whole cast and crew had a great experience making this film. 5 stars!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/08/23 Full Review Javian T Rage did a great job with a limited budget. This movie had a nice balance or suspense, humor, twist, and of course horror. It is definitely a scary movie that I would recommend. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Lumos M Ratings by friends and family? Super lame. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/28/22 Full Review christian s "Shady Grove" is a fun ride. In "cabin in the woods" style films, the character roles and their story beats are clear: The Hero is the savior, the Party Guy is usually too drunk or drugged up to be effective, and The Final Girl is the glue holding the group together. "Shady Grove" wisely and subtly reassigns these roles. What if The Party Guy is the glue? What happens if he goes missing? What if The Hero is the one too drugged up to even save himself? What if The Final Girl has to be the savior? The film's villains actually have an understandable, even socially tempting, motivation. It's their brutal methods of achieving it that bloodies their vision. Similar to the crazed villains in films like "The Hills Have Eyes" and "The Last House on the Left", they're not above murder, infanticide and assault. Surprisingly, there's also queer representation with Niki McElroy's Shaina serving as the first Black bisexual lead I've ever seen in a horror movie. The representation is also visible on the villain's side of the aisle, offering some balance and negating the queer villain trope. I also enjoyed how, although the leading players are Black, the story didn't follow the dying trend of serving as an allegory for racism and race relations. The characters weren't written white and just cast with Black actors (writers, take note, we know colorblind casting when we see it), and it's not the driving factor behind the villains' motivations. There's a line one of the villains delivers about "diversity" that made me chuckle. They may be absolute monsters, but they're all inclusive. McElroy shines as a Scream Queen. Todd Anthony's Mark, her character's lover, balances her performance as a good guy you can't help but to like. Other notable performances include Victoria Baldesarra as Taylor, delivering an enigmatic performance with small town girl charm, and Mohammad Abou-Abbas serves as the silent first kill, but not before throwing a hilarious "dude, you blocked me" facial expression that made me laugh out loud. An overall good time. Fingers crossed for a sequel. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
