What to Know

Critics Consensus

Sheila Levine Is Dead and Living in New York is a tonally confused adaptation that drains the novel's sharp edge into a half-hearted romantic fantasy.

John Simon New York Magazine/Vulture What minimal value the novel may have had is forfeited by this appalling adaption of the story. Apr 9, 2025 Full Review Judith Crist New York Magazine/Vulture The heroine, played by Jeannie Berlin, emerges as a dull klutz, a humorless whiner with bulldog determination and charm to match. Apr 9, 2025 Full Review Molly Haskell Village Voice Every time Furie's relentlessly dreary movie gets anywhere near a laugh, it immediately swerves and plunges into bathos. Apr 9, 2025 Full Review Frances Taylor Newark Star-Ledger The screenplay is trite and dull. Aug 27, 2025 Full Review Norman Dresser Toledo Blade Furie, who apparently had at least skimmed the novel but failed utterly to absorb its message, gives the film a dark, dismal look totally at varience with the admittedly feeble stabs to create a comedy romance. Apr 9, 2025 Full Review David Sterritt Christian Science Monitor The story gets stickier by the minute, and there are an awful lot of minutes as Sheila drags on interminably. Audience Member Best movie I've seen all year. Okay, it's 2016, but still. Great performances all around, and don't hate me for saying this, but this is the best I've seen Roy Scheider. He's more vulnerable here than I've ever seen him before. I caught it on TCM, but if you missed it, it's on The Paramount Vault on YouTube, an awesome legal channel for watching a ton of stuff, a lot of which has never been on DVD or VHS, like this one.
