In the village of Ramgarh, retired police chief Thakur Baldev Singh (Sanjeev Kumar) plots to bring down the notorious bandit Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan) and enlists the help of two lesser criminals, Jai (Amitabh Bachchan) and Veeru (Dharmendra). When Gabbar attacks the village, however, Jai and Veeru wonder why Thakur does nothing to help them. They soon learn that he has no arms, and that Gabbar was the one who cut them off. Enraged by this, they redouble their efforts to help.

Sholay delivers the goods, all right. It has, quite literally, everything -- action, adventure, romance, drama, comedy (very broad), musical numbers -- all superbly directed by young Ramesh Sippy.

The film's most celebrated action sequence is as propulsive as the train it’s set on, as one outlaw shovels coal into the locomotive furnace to speed it up, while another picks off converging bandits. But its most indelible scenes draw out time instead.

I will sit through musicals (fast fwd the music bits because I’m not insane), rom-coms, marvel films, mindless martial arts, dire art house but I simply could not sit through more than half an hour of this dirge. By the time we’re introduced to the slapstick prison warden, having seen a puerile Bollywood song beforehand, I realised that two and a half more hours of this rubbish would drive me close to insanity. This film might be entertaining for 8 year olds but any adult who genuinely enjoys this needs counselling. Dreadful stuff. What I did see was on ITV catchup.

I only recently learned about the movie and it did not disappoint! It watched like an old Western movie my dad would have watched with me but with the unique local flare of its origin country. Definitely take the time to give it a watch!

"Sholay" is widely considered one of the most successful Bollywood films ever made, and after finally getting around to watching it, it's easy to see why. This movie delivers a lot of solid entertainment with its fun characters and fast-paced action scenes. The movie has a lot more humor than I anticipated and the movie has a great villain that is entertaining but also menacing when he needs to be. The premise of this movie feels very old school similar to a classic Western in Hollywood but I actually liked this movie more than the iconic Westerns I have seen so far. This movie is a bit silly and over the top, but it is easy to overlook because of how often it is fun to watch. I did feel the movie was a bit long and sometimes the pacing is affected because of it. However, as a whole package, I think the movie is a lot of fun and one that I can see how it has gone down to be a well-known classic for many people.
