Kevin Thomas Los Angeles Times Sholay delivers the goods, all right. It has, quite literally, everything -- action, adventure, romance, drama, comedy (very broad), musical numbers -- all superbly directed by young Ramesh Sippy. Feb 17, 2021 Full Review Danny Bowes RogerEbert.com Sholay is a grand, maximalist revel. It's the kind of movie that, while it may pass into the status of so many older movies more talked about than seen, it became that thing by being great. Oct 20, 2017 Full Review Shubhra Gupta The Indian Express You can divide Hindi cinema into two eras, pre-and-post Sholay. It is a landmark. They don't make 'em like this anymore. Oct 20, 2017 Full Review Gayle Sequeira BFI The film's most celebrated action sequence is as propulsive as the train it’s set on, as one outlaw shovels coal into the locomotive furnace to speed it up, while another picks off converging bandits. But its most indelible scenes draw out time instead. Nov 17, 2024 Full Review Panos Kotzathanasis Asian Movie Pulse “Sholay” is like a tribute to cinema as a form of entertainment, which is the main reason it remains so fun to watch, even after so many years. Rated: 7.5 Jan 22, 2023 Full Review Jimmy Cage Jimmy Cage Movie Reviews (YouTube) Grand, mighty, iconic, monumental. SHOLAY is THE Indian epic that everyone must have seen. Robin N My girlfriend suggested we watch this last night. I'm so happy she did. The almost 50 year old film is just so alive and unpredictable. It beautifully spans so many aspects of life. It draws on Hollywood Western tropes but modulates them into something spicier and at times joyous. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/25/24 Full Review Leaburn O I will sit through musicals (fast fwd the music bits because I’m not insane), rom-coms, marvel films, mindless martial arts, dire art house but I simply could not sit through more than half an hour of this dirge. By the time we’re introduced to the slapstick prison warden, having seen a puerile Bollywood song beforehand, I realised that two and a half more hours of this rubbish would drive me close to insanity. This film might be entertaining for 8 year olds but any adult who genuinely enjoys this needs counselling. Dreadful stuff. What I did see was on ITV catchup. In a lot ways evolved Bollywood industry. Amitabh's role wasn't main but still it became memorable. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review manu p The most iconic movie of Indian cinema in the 70's. I dunno what a non Indian watching it today would think but nostalgia for us old school peeps. https://m.timesofindia.com/entertainment/hindi/bollywood/photo-features/sholay40-iconic-dialogue-from-the-film/sholay40-iconic-dialogue-from-the-film/photostory/48482660.cms Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Elliott S I only recently learned about the movie and it did not disappoint! It watched like an old Western movie my dad would have watched with me but with the unique local flare of its origin country. Definitely take the time to give it a watch!
