Sholay delivers the goods, all right. It has, quite literally, everything -- action, adventure, romance, drama, comedy (very broad), musical numbers -- all superbly directed by young Ramesh Sippy. Go to Full Review

Sholay is a grand, maximalist revel. It's the kind of movie that, while it may pass into the status of so many older movies more talked about than seen, it became that thing by being great. Go to Full Review

You can divide Hindi cinema into two eras, pre-and-post Sholay. It is a landmark. They don't make 'em like this anymore. Go to Full Review

Sholay covers every base, works all the emotions, and even today, when Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra show up, thunderous ovations result. Go to Full Review

Beyond its entertainment value, Sholay is emblematic of a nation still held in check by forces urging its people to be better than they were, but making the mistake of not confronting divides that ran deep and have since caught up with it. Go to Full Review

Anthony D @AnthonyDsilwa 4d I recently experienced the Director’s Cut of Sholay at Nishat Talkies in Grant Road, a classic B-grade single screen that primarily caters to labor and small-scale income groups. Choosing this specific theater was all about embracing pure nostalgia, as the gritty atmosphere perfectly transports you back to that authentic 1970s cinema vibe. The film itself remains a masterpiece of storytelling, fueled by exceptional writing that has clearly stood the test of time. While the lead heroes are iconic, the film truly belongs to Sir Amjad Khan, whose portrayal of Gabbar Singh defines cinematic villainy with unmatched intensity. His onscreen presence creates such a profound sense of dread and terror that capturing him feels like a task for an entire army rather than just two men. While the rest of the cast performs admirably, it is the sheer fear and menace of Gabbar that anchors the entire experience, and for that legendary performance, I am giving this film a three and half star rating !! I'm so happy she did. The almost 50 year old film is just so alive and unpredictable. It beautifully spans so many aspects of life. It draws on Hollywood Western tropes but modulates them into something spicier and at times joyous. See more Leaburn O 09/05/2024 I will sit through musicals (fast fwd the music bits because I’m not insane), rom-coms, marvel films, mindless martial arts, dire art house but I simply could not sit through more than half an hour of this dirge. By the time we’re introduced to the slapstick prison warden, having seen a puerile Bollywood song beforehand, I realised that two and a half more hours of this rubbish would drive me close to insanity. This film might be entertaining for 8 year olds but any adult who genuinely enjoys this needs counselling. Dreadful stuff. What I did see was on ITV catchup.
