lariste l After making the immersive, beautiful short Six Dollar Fifty Man, and getting a bit of festival attention - Mark Albiston and Louis Sutherland go for the full 90 minute stretch trying to make a film that's bleak and distant instead of dramatic and simply not compelling (or funny.). Conceived as a type of "therapy" for Sutherland's unhappy childhood (as are untold cinematic and theatrical concepts) - the film simply doesn't have a dramatic goal or series of story reveals to keep anyone involved. Picture does star Julian Dennison, who appeared in the delightful (and episodic) Hunt for the Wilderpeople not long after - this film, such as it is, focuses on a young persons far-from-perfect role models and occasional petty crime in the "tough, down and out" coastal stretch that is . . .Paekākāriki, which honestly is not remotely tough, although makes for a few great scenic shots, naturally. This film, like the previous, should have been a short, or rather gone through serious script development to make a compelling narrative out of what is, really, an uninvolving edit of an unremarkable feature film.
