Critics Consensus

Willem Dafoe delivers another outstanding performance in the central role, although it's undercut by Siberia's frustratingly elliptical approach.

Peter Bradshaw Guardian At times, it looks like a very severe version of Fellini or Jodorowsky. Rated: 4/5 Sep 23, 2021 Full Review Richard Whittaker Austin Chronicle Siberia is all interior, and the state of Clint (Dafoe) is unclear, the linear trajectory of his life fuzzy beyond recognition. Rated: 3/5 Jun 25, 2021 Full Review Nicolas Rapold New York Times Dafoe, a close collaborator with Ferrara, brings the intensity and nakedness (not just physical) necessary for the film's trip. Jun 22, 2021 Full Review Amy Smith InSession Film I struggled to understand what was going on, I was struggling to find a reason to care about the character or any of the dreams that he was in, and I was struggling to make it completely through the short runtime. Rated: D Feb 29, 2024 Full Review D.M. Palmer Vague Visages In the course of his travels, Clint begins to grasp the frailty of the form and the vulnerability of the vessel. Nov 9, 2023 Full Review Ben Flanagan Vague Visages Ferrara throws everything at Siberia, turning it into a playground for emotive relation. But it is Dafoe, his muse, who so thoroughly brings the audience along with the randomness… Sep 23, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Steve N I gather that Clint for some reason undervalued the love and care that the people in his life showed him, all the while surmising that his problem was that he "loved too much." His memories of why he abandoned people were horribly delusional. He chose a life of solitude, but did not choose to make it complete. In the end, he lost everything, or gained a new beginning? Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/26/23 Full Review Ryan K Every second of this film is pretentious nonsense. Even Dafoe can't make it watchable. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/12/23 Full Review Bruno F It's impossible to like a film you can't understand. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/15/23 Full Review Shock Therapy R Interesting concept and well acted. Siberian platform was appropriate. Yet the soul's seeking was quite particular and parochial and did not resonate as much as "Chicken With Plums" or "The Holy Mountain" or "Valley of the Gods". Love Willem though. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/26/22 Full Review Audience Member A self-indulgent, incoherent mess of a film, that delves into the psyche of the main character without ever really getting anywhere except further into the frozen wasteland where the film is set. The wasteland is more interesting to look at than the psychological unravelling of the main character who, at the end of the film, I still had no real understanding of. The landscape photography raised my rating by one star. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member If you read my book "Bardo Films: Cinema of the Afterlife" it would be very apparent that the subject in this film has died as the result of a bear attack, and is in the afterlife trying to resolve the many issues of his recent incarnation. There are definite echoes of the Mexican bardo film "Vera." Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Read all reviews
