Anupama Chopra Film Companion This is a film about human beings who can be flawed and prickly but if you go a little deeper, you will see beauty. This is a wonderfully written script, with a great performance by Paul Giamatti. Giamatti made you feel all of it. Kevin P An amazingly underappreciated comedy drama that just hits you so hard in all the right spots with its strong characters and themes about approaching life in the same way you decide how long to wait to open your bottle of wine. Miles and Jack are such strong characters with infectious chemistry and a really believable friendship. They're complete opposites, yet they're drawn to each other for the qualities they lack. Their strengths and weaknesses perfectly compliment each other. Jack is wild & reckless, but adventurous and helps Miles out of his shell to take chances he would otherwise miss out on. Miles is paralyzed with neuroticism & self doubt, but he's still very insightful and his common sense helps keep Jack's impulses in check and out of trouble. The movie just feels like one lovely relaxing vacation into the orchard countryside that you never want to leave. And neither do the characters. Jack just wants to escape reality and the upcoming big life changes & commitment that are approaching him with his marriage. He thinks he can just change it all with one last adventurous fling. But the second the beans are slipped, reality rears its ugly face again and he's forced to own up. He lost his chance that he never really deserved or even really had to begin with. And that makes him truly appreciate the life he should've never taken for granted. That sometimes enough really is just enough. Miles on the other hand, has to really wind up the courage to earn back the one woman who truly understands and loves him back. That gives his life meaning even when his writing aspirations are failing to do the same. To take risks and truly open your true self to someone you love, even if they won't take you back. It isn’t easy, but with enough honesty and soul searching, Miles finally finds his happiness and a second chance at love. All while playing a crucial role in helping his friend Jack lick his wounds and snapping some sense into him. It's a very funny and true-to-life movie that dives deep into the wonders of wine and human connection, topped off by great acting, witty comedy, and a warm smooth jazz soundtrack that sounds like how a fine bottle of wine tastes. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/05/25 Full Review Kevin F One of the all time greats. An incredible piece of cinema. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/03/25 Full Review bob c Twenty years on and still great! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/01/25 Full Review Bronwyn D I watched this because my uncle recommended. Surprised I hadn't seen, being it's 20 years old. I really enjoyed it. I related fully to Miles. Jack, not so much. But I liked Trying to understand him. Movie was funny in a couple places, but I definitely consider it more drama. Good acting, characters, & story. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/07/24 Full Review Mason M Another great film from Alexander Payne. Sideways is a delightful watch, it's very well written, it balances comedy and drama quite nicely, and Paul Giamatti does a great job. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/18/24 Full Review Read all reviews
