Ty Burr Washington Post If you want to see a talented director putting together pieces of a vision — however unclear — and an actress with the courage to leap with him into the unknown, “Sister Midnight” is worth your time. Rated: 3/4 Jun 9, 2025 Full Review Sergio Burstein Los Angeles Times One of those films that deserves to be seen without knowing much about it, because of its unhinged and eventually violent twists, but always supported by a surprisingly colorful aesthetic. [Full review in Spanish Jun 9, 2025 Full Review Rahul Desai The Hollywood Reporter It’s a go-girl quest that could’ve been depicted in many mainstream ways, but Sister Midnight forces it to stay undetectable. Jun 4, 2025 Full Review Poulomi Das The Federal It is a film that doesn’t believe in payoffs as a narrative rule, rather one that revels in its frenetic, at times, jarring disjointed quality. Ideas are held together less and embraced more for their vibes. Jun 13, 2025 Full Review Tony Yang In Review Online [The] tonal whiplash... is ultimately more baffling than it is satisfying. But flights of fancy are to be expected within a dream, and... one is reasonably inclined to just drift away with [Sister Midnight]. Jun 6, 2025 Full Review Lachmi Deb Roy Firstpost The story of the film is weirdly different, but it wouldn’t have shone with the brilliant performances by Radhika Apte, Ashok Pathak and Chhaya Kadam. Frank A V Definitely didn’t know what I expected but definitely was rewarded for that. Beautifully shot and moved wonderfully. Strong acting and sets! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/11/25 Full Review Rick Segall One of the most original films you will ever see. Quirky, odd, funny, and unique. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/02/25 Full Review Mirza M 'Sister Midnight' is a bold, unconventional and audacious debut feature that is darkly funny and visually striking throughout. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/20/25 Full Review Jim A Saw the previews a few times beforehand, then saw the glowing reviews. A noticeable portion of the audience did walk out. The film, to me, was without a discernible plot structure and did feature long passages where little happened to further that “plot.” Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/20/25 Full Review Alan W A more pretentious reviewer would proclaim writer-director Karan Kandhari's Hindi-language 'comedy' has the bone-dry, deadpan humour of Aki Kaurismäki, the disconnected dreaminess of a David Lynch film and the gleefully wild, female empowering melodramatic tendencies of early Pedro Almodovar. However, if I'm totally honest, this is more a film where sensible plotting takes a back seat to kooky atmosphere and surreal for surreal's sake, and it pretty much flies totally over my head. Granted, I was never bored or irritated, as I can never guess which crazy left turn the film will take next, and frankly, the one thing this film is not short of, is ideas; but I cannot tell you what all of it is about, other than it's a tough and mundane existence being a desperate housewife in Mumbai. Radhika Apte's Uma and Ashok Pathak's Gopal, who both get full marks for their total commitment to their roles, are clueless, unhappy, and sexually frustrated newlyweds in an arranged marriage. Uma then befriended a neighbour, Chhaya Kadam's Sheetal, who teaches her how to cook, found a job as a cleaner and gets taken in with the local hijra community; all the while, she's slowly turning more feral, threatening to take the film into Nightbitch or some different genre, if not for the stop-motion animals which just make things more bewildering, and that's before things spiral further south for the couple. This is a marmite of a film, in terms of whether or not you find all this funny and/or meaningful. While I chuckled a few times, mostly I just sat there scratching my head wondering if any real 'plot' will finally kick in. Technically accomplished, with eye-catching visuals and an English soundtrack that adds to its otherworldliness, but otherwise, it's just too abstract and nonsensical for my liking. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/16/25 Full Review Lara L One of the most interesting, creative, funny and thoughtful movies I have seen in a while! Combo of a 1930’s silent movie slapstick, Planet 9 from Outer Space especially with the effects, and psychedelic movie with amazing acting and great soundtrack!
