Richard Brody New Yorker Rouch poses weighty challenges to the unquestioned routines of daily life; his small-scale film has the rich social, political, historical, and psychological implications of an epic feature. Nov 9, 2020 Full Review Melissa Anderson Time Out Rated: 3/5 Nov 17, 2011 Full Review Kathie Smith Minneapolis Star Tribune What most ensemble films lack in cohesiveness, Six in Paris finds in historical context. Forty years later, it is an essential testament of the French New Wave's energy, ingenuity and aesthetic. Rated: 3.5/4 Dec 5, 2008 Full Review Alexander Miller Film Inquiry Six from Paris suffers from the flippant transparency that's all too common with this informal subgenre, the lure of having all these talented apples in once basket is an interesting bit of trivia, but it seems like no one bothered to check for bruises. Jan 28, 2021 Full Review Sarah Boslaugh TheArtsStl ...it helps if the friends you ask to take part-Eric Rohmer, Claude Chabrol, Jean-Luc Godard, Jean-Daniel Pollet, Jean Rouch, and Jean Douchet-include some of the most distinguished directors in the history of French cinema. Rated: 6/10 Jan 19, 2021 Full Review Dwight MacDonald Esquire Magazine As a nicely colored travelogue, not bad, but people and plots keep interfering, and they are much less interesting than the streets and buildings. DeWayne B Jean Rouch's "Gare du Nord" is the cream of the crop among the six short films here. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/29/23 Full Review Audience Member It's a very La Nouvelle Vague thing. After all, it was a compilation of 6 different directors' short segments released in 1969. I like Jean Douchet's < Saint Germain-Des-Pres > most for its easiness. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member 6 episodes from 6 film makers Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Raw, unpolished, the way Nouvelle Vague shines. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member A portmanteau film of six shorts directed by three well-known nouvelle vague directors (Rohmer, Godard, Chabrol) and three relative unknowns (Rouch, Douchet, Pollet) gathered together by Barbet Schroeder and ordered to follow certain rules (not unlike Dogme 95): natural lighting, real Paris locations, no stars. Most of the directors manage to sketch out a little bit of drama (focused mostly on love/sex or relationships) with characters that might hold up to further scrutiny. Upon reflection, Jean Rouch and Claude Chabrol win the day. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member Uneven episodes set at different Paris locales.
