As a senior in high school, Joan Huang idolizes winning Prom Queen as the embodiment of popularity, beauty and the ultimate form of acceptance into American life. In her relentless pursuit for the crown, she undergoes an experimental racial transformation to become White and win Prom Queen. However, what she thought was a dream come true soon reveals itself to be an emotional and physical nightmare. "Slanted" offers a searing and unapologetically satirical view on race and the uncomfortable journey of learning to love yourself and your culture.

Critics Consensus

Slanted blends genre thrills and pointed commentary on racial identity into an daring body horror parable, even if its occasionally unfocused script keeps writer-director Amy Wang's provocative vision from fully landing.

Informed by Wang’s own life growing up Chinese Australian, "Slanted" nails the micro-aggressions, body dysmorphia and desire to belong that can make coming of age while being "other" its own perplexing kind of hell. Go to Full Review

The whole film is quite meek in its approach, timidly dipping its toes into camp, satire, cultural criticism, and body horror, but never fully embracing any of them. Go to Full Review

Wang deals out absurdist humor with a deft hand, especially in scenes where Ethnos and its corporate videos extol the so-called joys of whiteness. Go to Full Review

SLANTED uses some boundary-expanding devices, but doesn’t quite land in any of the genres it seeks to be. Go to Full Review

While Wang’s satire is sharp, especially the visual skewering of rancid American culture via advertisements, business names, and even a white supremacy karaoke video, the film’s the characterizations are weak. Go to Full Review

Joe H 14h Went to see Slanted and was pleasantly surprised how into it I was, one part social commentary, one part body horror, and one part sci-fi. Could have gone either way with the source material but mostly landed (and LOL at Dollar Tree looking logo for a store called "prayers and guns" and the school mascot "The Wizards" being a guy in a klan robe" film seems to exist in a republican fever dream of a small town featuring "merica lite beer, freedom bean coffee, and USA burgers). For the record I'm white but not Michael Buble white See more Mercedez 1d It was entertaining. Great performances from the actors who played Joan’s parents. See more Gregg P 1d A well done cautionary tale. Better than I thought. See more Stephanie Noelle 1d I thought the movie has great until I realized that it copied The Substance exactly. The screenwriter did an okay job recreating that movie, but it feels lazy to me when a movie studio just copies a great, original story just to make a quick buck. The premise and the ending were exactly the same, but I do think that The Substance is still better. I will say though, that the acting and set design were done very well. So kudos to the team behind the movie. See more Elizabeth O 1d This movie was so layered. I enjoyed every second of it. It made me uncomfortable in a way that I knew exactly how she was feeling and I understood why she felt that way. It reminded so much about how having your own individual identity can save you so much heartache and also how subtle and sinister propaganda can be in any form. So worth the watch. I recommend everyone watch it! See more Sierra 1d great movie, really well done. evoked so many emotions throughout. See more Read all reviews
