What to Know

Critics Consensus

Sleepaway Camp is a standard teen slasher elevated by occasional moments of John Waters-esque weirdness and a twisted ending.

Scott Tobias The Dissolve There are great films and then there are magical films, glorious oddities that pop up sui generis out of nowhere. Sleepaway Camp falls squarely into the latter category. Rated: 4/5 May 27, 2014 Full Review Nick Schager Lessons of Darkness Still the finest Sleepaway Camp, if only because of its memorable final shot. Rated: B Jul 21, 2005 Full Review Ed Gonzalez Slant Magazine Evokes a period in time before Ritalin and common sense. Rated: 2/4 Apr 20, 2005 Full Review Bryce Hanson Horror Movie Talk It proves that in many very important ways, you can’t recreate 80’s horror. This movie might not be for everyone, but if you are a fan of campy horror, or even just cult classics in general, you should enjoy this one as much as I did. Rated: 7/10 Aug 8, 2025 Full Review Mattie Lucas trans|cendental cinema Its over-the-top grotesqueries are pure camp, serving as a constant performance of gender and gender stereotypes in which Angela is hopelessly trapped so that the final moment of catharsis feels both heartbreaking and completely earned. May 13, 2025 Full Review Cody Leach Cody Leach (YouTube) If there ever was a beautiful disaster, it's Sleepaway Camp. Almost everything about the production is of poor quality; yet, there is an undeniable charm and hilarity to it's end result. The kills are creative and the ending will stick with you forever. Eric W. It never occurred to me that this film was insinuating that certain men wanted to be feminine. Despite that, it has one of the most disturbing and traumatizing endings in horror history. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/13/25 Full Review chris h Very average and slow at times... At the time, the end was shocking. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/12/25 Full Review Nashville I Not good. Not good at all. BAD filmcritics lied when they pumped this up as an underrated gem of a horror movie. The truth is there are some movies that are so bad they’re good, and this is just bad. Cringeworthy to be honest. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/31/25 Full Review Ean N Super super well made. Even though its one of those semi- forgotten 80s slasher movies, its one i would definitely rewatch. Especially the ending, still makes me think about it till this day. Great storyline in my opinion, probably wouldnt recommend the other two movies 2 and 3, but this one is definitely the better of the three. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/29/25 Full Review T F i might be a little biased i watched this when i was young, but good god did this movie ever get me, i mean i have watched the others but this was my first real out of the blue camp slasher outside of friday the 13th, it's the reason i liked the camp American horror story season the best Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/24/25 Full Review Nick O Pure, glistening and unapologetic yet beautifully bizarre slasher sleaze that gives Friday The 13th a run for its money!
