Laugh-out-loud funny and endearingly messy, Sleepwalk with Me overcomes its tonal inconsistencies to deliver a sweetly melancholic, amiably reassuring indie crowd-pleaser.

Dean E Wow, just when you would think that a life of $20 a night comedian could not get any worse..............watch this. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/15/23 Full Review Audience Member It's boring, long-winding & poor quality drama. I stop half way Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Mike J I sleepwalk all the time boy can I relate. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/28/22 Full Review Audience Member Great story, well told. I have listened to the original stand up it was based on several times and it was a joy to see it played out on the screen. PLUS Carol Kane! I mean, come on! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Mike Birbiglia is a comic who has a stand-up routine that I’ve seen or heard snippets of several times in the past, and I find him quite hilarious. When I heard he made films, I remember thinking his movies must be a laugh riot. What I’ve learned from watching them both is that his life, while at times funny, has inspired some heavier drama as well. His jokes can get me laughing until my face hurts, but Sleepwalk with Me barely made me chuckle. That’s not to say I disliked the film, in fact my expectations were prepared for this kind of reaction because that’s how I felt about Don’t Think Twice also. There were certainly some humorous moments in the film, and if you’re the type of person who likes awkward comedy this might be a home run of laugh-out-loud moments. Personally, that kind of comedy makes me cringe more than laugh. I have this tendency to empathize too much with the characters in movies, so when I watch something (like Mike Birbiglia doing disastrously bad jokes and bombing on stage) I squirm in my chair uncomfortably. Yet, there was something endearing about Sleepwalk with Me. Even though it was a difficult journey for “Matt,” I was along for the ride and desperate to hear how he would overcome his struggles. I’ll admit it was not always “fun” watching him stumble through life, particularly when we can see disaster on the horizon and he does nothing to stop it, but he’s such a charming guy that I don’t mind. The entire movie feels deeply personal, and you can see the ups-and-downs in Mike’s own life through this character. I liked that it was all presented as a sort of personal memoir with Mike speaking directly to camera. I do wish we had a better understanding of when, where, and why he was telling the story, though. Whenever we flash to these scenes it is basically the same as every other scene in the film with the exception of him talking to camera. I think Sleepwalk with Me is a borderline movie that was dangerously close to being something I hated, but instead it fell on the other side and was a film I did enjoy. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/24/19 Full Review Audience Member I love the message this movie has to offer! It's funny and amazing since it's true!
