Vanessa Martinez Shadow and Act [Small of Her Back] is not a film for everyone; but one that I definitely appreciated for its script - intelligent, clever wordplay and original, unpredictable twists. Aug 15, 2017 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Nicole Beharie stars in this off-Broadway-play-turned-indie-film as Piper, a suicidal shut-in suffering from Bi-Polar Disorder, who started a relationship with, Mollie whom she met online months ago. A knock on a door from John Sharp, who introduces himself as Mollie's brother who's come to talk her out of the thing's she's been threatening lately, turns Piper's world upside down. Originally titled, The Small of Her Back, Apartment 4E is written & directed by Russell Leigh Sharman and features an enthralling performance from Beharie that will leave you wanting to watch it again. It's a film that watches more like a stage production, which for many isn't appealing, but for me is a great way to keep my attention - a seemingly otherwise impossible feat. This is very easily one of my favorite performances from Beharie. Here, you can appreciate the subtleties of her acting, the tiny nuances that make her performances so powerful. If you want to see Nicole Beharie put in work, you want to see this film. Moreover, there's a message in this body of work - one that you aren't beat over the head with, yet still hits you pretty hard, giving you a new landscape of what mental disorder looks like. Beharie's bi-polar and secluded, Piper is believable, honest, and accurate. Overall it's an apt performance to say the least. Do yourself a favor and watch it!
