100% Tomatometer 13 Reviews Simon (Théodore Pellerin) is a rising star in Montreal's drag scene performing lively disco pop numbers weekly at his local club. Friendly with his fellow drag queens and supported by his sister, who delights in designing increasingly elaborate and beautiful costumes for his act, Simon vibrates with the passion of his adopted artistic community. When he meets Oliver (Félix Maritaud), the alluring new recruit at the club, their irresistible chemistry sparks an electric romance and a fulfilling creative collaboration. Their dynamic is mesmerizing and tender until Oliver's dominant instincts and destructive behavior jeopardize Simon's space in the spotlight. Simon has plenty of experience with tempestuous personalities -- his mother, a bona fide opera diva, is back in his life after years on the road -- but can he get out from under the shadow of their influence? Beautifully charting the highs and lows of falling in love and finding oneself in one's art, writer and director Sophie Dupuis's SOLO is a passionate feat of character-driven storytelling and visual extravagance, celebrating the drag world in all its splendor and heartache. Peter Howell Toronto Star A dexterous film that combines bold images with the quiet beat of a heart torn asunder two ways. Rated: 3.5/4 Sep 29, 2023 Full Review Candice Frederick Huffington Post Showing equal care for both the dazzling drag performances and the more delicate moments in the film, Dupuis delivers a beautiful reflection of the human spirit. Sep 14, 2023 Full Review Jennie Kermode Eye for Film Solo features wonderfully detailed sets which give depth and meaning to its characters’ lives, plus fantastic costume work both on and off the stage. Rated: 3.5/5 Mar 5, 2024 Full Review Pat Mullen Xtra Magazine While Solo situates Simon’s growth within a clearly defined chosen family, the film ultimately hinges on Pellerin’s performance. It’s a lively star-is-born turn in which one sees an actor fully come into his own. Oct 10, 2023 Full Review Andrew Parker The Gate On one key level, Solo can be read as a cautionary tale about the nature of co-dependency, but closer examination finds a richer story about how generational traumas can shape who we are, for better and for worse. Rated: 10/10 Oct 2, 2023 Full Review Courtney Small Exclaim! A vibrant and emotionally rich tale Rated: 9/10 Sep 27, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Mental illness film Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/18/24 Full Review John S Booooring. The main character is a doormat mama's boy, from beginning to end—supposedly he comes into his own but there is no evidence of it. His love interest is purely toxic, so what is the point? There is no moral ambiguity, no insights, nothing. Dialogue is purely functional. Everything said is soooo literal. Like watching a soap opera mashed up with Flashdance. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/28/23 Full Review Josh G An honest, well executed film with vibrant colors and bold lighting. It mixes in a wonderful background soundtrack creating an atmosphere and element only sound can bring. Mixed between performance and real life lies the heart of this film. Just please balance the damn music the editor needs to balance the audio better. All music should always be the same volume as the talking always. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/18/23 Full Review brad l stunning cinematography with a realistic portrayal of drag life and relationships Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/27/23 Full Review Warren S Absolutely one of the better movies in 2023. Colorful, emotional, engaging, and great throw-back music. After this movie, drag queen stuff is no longer - instead you will see the creative expression, the art form of presentation, and the love of performing with passion, detail and attention. I got caught up in the many relations that are as much part of the movie as is performing - mother-son, brother-sister, man-man lovers, co-workers, and ultimately, the triumph of self-respect, self-expression, and self-worth. Truly an emotional ride, with plenty of audience tears of joy. A must-see 2023 firm. It will have you talking about drag very differently, and with support and strength. A movie for straights to explore and discover and a movie for all gays to celebate. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/18/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
