Wesley Morris Boston Globe Rated: 3/4 Nov 24, 2011 Full Review Jan Stuart Newsday First released in 1991, Alfonso Cuaron's Solo Con Tu Pareja (Only With Your Partner) is a manic puff of nonsense that plays off the AIDS panic of the preceding decade. Rated: 2/4 Sep 21, 2006 Full Review V.A. Musetto New York Post Solo Con Tu Pareja is not as mature as Y Tu Mama Tambien, but it is consistently funny. Rated: 3/4 Sep 20, 2006 Full Review Tim Brayton Antagony & Ecstasy Very much the work of a young filmmaker of obvious talent in need of just a smidgen more discipline, training, and experience. Rated: 7/10 Sep 15, 2013 Full Review Eric Monder Film Journal International It is hard to fathom how such a talented artist could come up with such a painfully unfunny comedy. Mar 1, 2007 Full Review Marta Barber Miami Herald Cuaron demonstrates his capacity as a director. The camera work is impressive, his sense of humor sharp, and the characters are well defined. Dave S After being spurned during a one-night stand, a nurse alters the results of a blood test from her potential lover to indicate that he is HIV positive, setting off an unlikely chain of events. Solo Con Tu Pareja, Alfonso Cuaron's debut film, is great to look at, filled with creative cinematography, some snappy editing, and a vibrant color palette. Beyond that, however, it's a bit of a mess, often playing like a particularly frantic episode of Three's Company. Most of the laughs miss the mark and the sexy scenes aren't really very sexy, mostly because it's difficult to make something sexy and funny out of AIDS and suicide. Despite that, it's easy to see the promise that Cuaron would manifest a few years later. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/20/23 Full Review Audience Member The most uniquely Cuaron movie, it is a funny, cynical and dramatic fest, uniquely mexican, underneath its seemingly superficial theatrics one suspects true pain unseen and un-showcased by the characters Clarisa and Tomas, broken people who find function in their constantly dysfunctional life. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Silly, predictable, melodramatic, but entertaining. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Audience Member Alfonso Cuarón's first full lenght feature and a pretty hidden gem of the humorus kind. A player and womanizer does his thing around town. His friends are doctors and they goof around with him as he shags around in his appartment and at his neighbours places. He screws up with the wrong nurse chick as she falsely diagnose him with AIDS. This happen pretty late into the film, but he takes his time to read the test results once they come in. I recomend you not to read IMDB's short storyline as it gives away almost all the plot, but it has quite a twist. It's always interesting and funny. Repitative when needed, slapsticky at the right moments. Some very lovely ladies here and it has some interesting cuts and scenes that never are truly explained. Not much wrong here, but it's a bit loose and unlikely. 7.5 out of 10 paper cones. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member A fairly average comedy, but spiced up with the quirks of Cuaron at the helm Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Cuaron is one of my personal favorite directors, Solo Con Tu Pareja didn't do much for me. A very slight romantic comedy, the main actor didn't stand out at all to me and his character isn't one you want to really spend time with. None of the female characters really get to register, either. It's slapstick elements made this play like a Pedro Almodovar melodrama, and not one of his better ones.
