      Critics Consensus

Somebody Up There Likes Me proves there's still life left in the charmingly offbeat indie dramedy, largely thanks to the efforts of its immensely likable cast.

kevin c This was a fun quirky movie which is about a man and his friend played by Keith Poulson and Nick Offerman who work as waiters and the woman they both love played by Jess Weixler. I enjoyed this as it was pretty amusing. And the story is told in slices of life of the characters over many years. Something a little different, which is a welcome change. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member A bit naive really but truly charming characters that gets you thinking on why the mess that they're all caught in is somewhat a manifestation on the choices they made. Clearly, the jokes are somewhat absurd but laughable with discrete goofiness to suffer well :) Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member This film was almost good. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Possibly the worst movie I have EVER seen. No actually after thinking about it, it IS the worst movie I have EVER seen. It is not funny and the plot makes no sense. Avoid at all costs. Leah Churner Austin Chronicle Somebody is nihilistic, misanthropic, and weirdly relaxing. I've never seen anything like it. Rated: 4/5 Apr 5, 2013 Full Review Neil Genzlinger New York Times It's all kind of cute. Maybe a little too cute, but it does have a nice circle-of-life ending. Rated: 3/5 Mar 28, 2013 Full Review Ted Scheinman Village Voice The film itself is so charming that you almost forget to ask whether these people truly deserve our empathy. Mar 26, 2013 Full Review Ed Travis Hollywood Jesus While I found the film cute at times, the pervading apathy of Somebody Up There Likes Me left me feeling a little disconnected. Apr 1, 2020 Full Review Leah Churner Cinema Scope Nick Offerman is a scene-stealing genius. Sep 27, 2017 Full Review Eric D. Snider EricDSnider.com It might not be everyone's cup of tea, but this mixture of magical realism and bittersweet absurdity benefits from a consistency of vision and a genuinely unusual storytelling approach.
