After big-mouthed Hollywood nightclub entertainer Mike Donnelly (Mickey Rooney) is drafted into the army, he struggles to take military protocol seriously, but frequently clashes with his hard-nosed commanding officer, Sgt. Crockett (Gordon Jones). While there, Donnelly also tries to catch the attention of Colleen Rafferty (Anne James), a beautiful military nurse, and to fend off Barney Fisher (Arthur Space), a newspaper columnist set on humiliating him.
