Brian Tallerico RogerEbert.com It's impossible to deny that what "Special ID" does well it does extremely well. Rated: 2.5/4 Mar 7, 2014 Full Review Martin Tsai Los Angeles Times There's little suspense to speak of but plenty of roundhouse kicks to keep you shocked and awed. Mar 6, 2014 Full Review Nick Schager The Dissolve [T]he story is a hopeless mess that from the outset seems to be missing key exposition that might help fill in some of its many gaps. Rated: 2.5/5 Mar 6, 2014 Full Review Andrew Heskins easternKicks.com Donnie Yen returns to contemporary action thrillers in a so-so undercover thriller with some fantastic action scenes... Rated: 3/5 Sep 24, 2020 Full Review Jay Stone Canada.com They don't match the eye-popping athleticism of The Raid 2. In fact, some of it seems kind of stodgy. Rated: 2.5/5 Apr 25, 2014 Full Review Daniel Eagan Film Journal International Hard-core action movies like this, with difficult physical stunts and limited special effects, are hard to find these days. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 04/29/23 Full Review Audience Member Donnie Yen is the man! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Special ID is hardly anything new in terms of the Undercover Cop or Kung Fu genres, but it does what it does well and doesn't attempt anything else. The main hero and villain are well developed and have a good dynamic, the cinematography is lush and colorful, the editing is first rate, the performances solid and the action scenes are extremely well choreographed and executed. This doesn't just end with solid fight blocking, but also involves some seriously intricate stuntwork involving people being thrown down staircases (mid-shot, not a cutaway of its own) and Donnie Yen performing short bouts of parkour mid-fight in a way reminiscent of 90's Jackie Chan, just without the comedic element. If this sounds good to you, I'd certainly recommend it - it's just a fun action flick and doesn't outstay its welcome. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member The dialogue is so poor in this movie, it's so terrible to watch! Action yes it's still there but could be better. Overall not a very good Donnie Yen movie. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member Another China/HK co-producing brainless action flick. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member Usual Kung fu of Donnie yen. Only lesser. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Read all reviews
