Critics Consensus

Spike Island has energy and visual style to spare; unfortunately, they're lost within the movie's clichéd story and choppy direction.

Larushka Ivan-Zadeh metro.co.uk If you want to mosh about in Stone Roses nostalgia, check out Shane Meadows doc Made Of Stone instead. Rated: 2/5 Sep 5, 2017 Full Review Sheri Linden Los Angeles Times Though the story is drawn in broad strokes and overloaded with melodrama, director Mat Whitecross' exuberant feature understands the communal joy and personal necessity of rock 'n' roll. May 7, 2015 Full Review Wendy Ide Times (UK) Spike Island has plenty of feckless, disorganised charm. Rated: 3/5 May 4, 2015 Full Review Adam Lowes CineVue All the usual coming of age tropes are present and correct, but it's nothing we haven't seen numerous times before. Rated: 3/5 Feb 26, 2019 Full Review Joseph Walsh CineVue It all feels too simplistic. Rated: 2/5 Aug 23, 2018 Full Review Daniel Barnes Sacramento News & Review Taking its cue from the sort of pandering nostalgia that usually gets peddled to Baby Boomers, Mat Whitecross' irritating Spike Island follows a teenage gang of the Stone Roses' superfans in 1990 Manchester. GroupMylink G Really enjoyed this film made me smile and cry what more do you want from a film! well put together and great acting regards - https://groupmy.link Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/03/24 Full Review isla s This is a somewhat nostalgic film about early 90s britpop - more specifically, the 1990 concert by the Stone Roses at Spike Island in Manchester. Its also got a bleak side/aspect to it, with strained parental relationships etc. Regardless, there's definitely a small amount of hope present, which I liked and I liked the energy felt during the snippets of live performances shown at the start of the film. Its quite an urban film, of course, with some drug taking scenes. Some of the characters, while not entirely polite or charming (their lairy lads, of course) they don't seem ultimately bad people. I thought the characterisation was quite good and the cast do a decent job in their portrayals. I thought this was a pretty engrossing watch, certainly surprisingly emotional at times. I enjoyed it and would recommend it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member I just found the main characters really annoying. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member The main characters are slightly interesting but the plot has no surprises, boring. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member Really enjoyed this film made me smile and cry what more do you want from a film! well put together and great acting Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member Tremendous reminder of a time and a place when life was based around music.
