Critics Consensus

A perfectly light, warmly funny romantic comedy that's kept afloat by Ron Howard's unobtrusive direction and charming performances from Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah.

Rita Kempley Washington Post Splash, an aquacade of myth and laughter, glimmers like moonlit tide. It's an enrapturing underwater romance pairing dry-lander Tom Hanks with mermaid Daryl Hannah (not an easy affair for a nonswimmer). Jul 3, 2018 Full Review Duane Byrge The Hollywood Reporter It's a rambunctious comedy, coming from director Ron Howard who, with his previous, wacky Night Shift, unarguably shows that beneath that Opie Taylor/Richie Cunningham persona, there's a wild and crazy spirit. Mar 9, 2017 Full Review Richard Schickel TIME Magazine A romantic comedy that is as salty and bracing as a plunge in the surf. May 10, 2009 Full Review Alan Jones Starburst There's poetry here, believe it or not, and grace too, perfectly highlighted by the remarkably gifted cast. Aug 1, 2022 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins Manages plenty of laugh-out-loud moments and genuine fun. Rated: 7/10 Sep 7, 2020 Full Review Octavi Marti El Pais (Spain) Splash could have been a silly and simple comedy, but it escapes that destiny thanks to its creative script and talented actors. Garrett B A clever rom-com from the 1980s Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/17/24 Full Review Jeffrey K Just a man trying to consensually f*ck a mermaid. Leave him alone! Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/21/24 Full Review Preston S This movie is good! One of the best mermaid films I have ever seen! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/08/23 Full Review Steve D too ridiculous to work. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/03/23 Full Review Swan T I made an account because this movie was that bad. The actual epitome of everyone is awful, the opposite of charming and skirting on psychotic. The entire film is about a typical guy in New York guy who has sex with s stranger and it kicked so much ass he gave everything he could to marry a woman he knew nothing about other than that butt was dope. Alan, Hanks character, is a complete ass hole in every moment. Madison is an understandably weird attempt at a human but never particularly amusing in her oddities. To top it off, some how by the end of the film the brother who drops coins to look up skirts comes across as the most sincere character in the entire film, but not before echoing Alan's boohoo I just want to love and never will miserable baby shit. Props to John Candy though, who is never not fun to watch. Leave it in the 80's, it's actual trash and filled with the worst kind of characters, the worst kind of relationships and not enough time letting John Candy be John Candy. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/21/23 Full Review Francisco S Some movies just don't stand the pass of time. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/15/23 Full Review Read all reviews
