      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Filled with dull action sequences and an underdeveloped storyline, this fifth Trek movie is probably the worst of the series.

Albert W Ugh... definitely not one of the better Star Trek movies... but it is still Star Trek. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/12/24 Full Review Steven S Enjoyable movie. Three court characters are the real stars of the film. The relationships stand out to this day. Effects aren't that great but effects were never a staple for this series. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/24/24 Full Review jesse g I'm a lifelong TOS Star Trek fan. This is my favorite Star Trek film. I hear fans complaining about this and that but for me it was satisfying. It featured the people over the special effects. Shatner did a much better job on this than he's ever giving himself credit for doing. Everyone has an opinion on this film but mine is thank you Mr Shatner for a very entertaining film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/22/24 Full Review Alec B There is a kind of ambition here, not successful at all but ambition none the less. That's why the failure hurts so badly here. I still can't believe Kirk's "outsmarting" of "god" was done seriously here. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/07/24 Full Review Alysha S I loved the lighting in the scene that started the film/preceded the main title. The writing is absolutely astounding. Where the film falls short the most is that it seemed to have quickly burned through a big aspect to the larger Star Trek story -- and it didn't have the payoff it should have had, either. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/24 Full Review Kieran H I am a massive Star Trek fan. This movie was actually the very first "Trek" I ever watched, it played on BBC1 on a Saturday night and I was around nine or ten years old so for me (at that time) it wasn't so bad. Of course I am now older and wiser and i know a good movie from a bad one. But. This movie is not all THAT bad. It is very typically Star Trek. Regardless of what one may say about pacing and direction etc etc. I can see what it tries (clumsily) to say. It's okay, I've a soft spot for this one. Ryan Murphy Miami Herald While intimate scenes of male bonding among Kirk, Spock and "Bones" McCoy are particularly delightful, the film's overall themes -- God creation, friendships as family -- are never tied together or amply explained. Rated: 2/4 Aug 17, 2021 Full Review Gene Siskel Chicago Tribune The film is neither much of a character story nor an action adventure. Rated: 1.5/4 Aug 23, 2017 Full Review Kevin Thomas Los Angeles Times It has high adventure, nifty special effects and much good humor, but it also has a wonderful resonance to it. Sep 7, 2016 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The Final Frontier offers a frightening look into the ego of an actor who writes and directs himself as the man who proves God does not exist. Rated: 1.5/4 Sep 5, 2023 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Easily the weakest of all 13 Star Trek feature films to date. Rated: 2/4 Sep 11, 2022 Full Review Jeffrey Lyons Video Review Simultaneously obvious and obtuse. Rated: 1/4 Aug 5, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews
