Critics Consensus

Though failing to reach the cinematic heights of its predecessors, Return of the Jedi remains an entertaining sci-fi adventure and a fitting end to the classic trilogy.

Michael Blowen Boston Globe Return of the Jedi, the final act of George Lucas' first Star Wars trilogy, is the best one yet. Apr 25, 2025 Full Review Joseph Gelmis Newsday One may carp, gripe, quibble with "Jedi," but Lucasfilm's special effects subsidiary, Industrial Light and Magic, is in a class by itself as creator of screen magic. And when it is good, "Jedi" is peerless escapist fantasy. Rated: 3/4 Apr 25, 2025 Full Review Gene Siskel Chicago Tribune Return of the Jedi is a childlike delight. It's the best video game around. And for the professional moviegoers, it is particularly enjoyable to watch every facet of filmmaking at its best. Rated: 4/4 Apr 25, 2025 Full Review Wesley Lovell Cinema Sight One thing the Star Wars saga has been great at is a terrific balance of action and drama that keeps the audience engaged from beginning to end. Rated: 3/4 Jul 6, 2025 Full Review Terry Orme Salt Lake Tribune There is a sense of sentimentality pervading this film -- not the mushy, maudlin type, but a warm feeling that says, "We have come to know these characters, and this probably is the last film in which they will appear together. It's been a pleasure." Apr 25, 2025 Full Review David Patrick Stearns Gannett News Service Besides being good entertainment, "Jedi" resonates on a deeper, metaphoric level -- the characters are more human, the images more Freudian, and the drama more internal and psychological. Joe A I haven't seen Return of the Jedi on the big screen since the 80s and this was great fun! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/02/23 Full Review Sully Sure Ewoks are annoying but rest of it is amazing Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/29/23 Full Review Joshua It was so surreal seeing Jedi on the big screen. The Death Star explosion never gets old! Had an absolute blast! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/29/23 Full Review Skitty The music hits different in theaters 👌🏻 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/29/23 Full Review Alex R What a great movie! George Lucas is a genius! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/28/23 Full Review kish b ★★★★★ Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi is the perfect fairy-tale ending that somehow still feels earned after the darkness of Empire: a joyous, heartfelt, downright euphoric celebration that wraps the original trilogy in the biggest, warmest hug imaginable. From the second Jabba’s sail barge explodes in a fireball of pure 1983 satisfaction, you know this one’s going to be fun. The speeder-bike chase on Endor is still the most exhilarating action sequence in the entire saga (those trees come at you like bullets). The throne-room confrontation between Luke, Vader, and the Emperor is peak mythic drama: Ian McDiarmid cackling like a space demon, Mark Hamill’s quiet "I am a Jedi, like my father before me," and that lightning-soaked redemption moment will never not wreck me. And then there’s the space battle above the second Death Star: the single greatest fleet engagement ever filmed. The Rebel pilots screaming through the superstructure, Lando threading the needle in the Falcon, Wedge taking the shot, "It’s a trap!" turning into the most triumphant "YEE-HAW!" in cinema history. Meanwhile on the forest moon you’ve got Ewoks (yes, I said it, the Ewoks are awesome) proving that stone-age teddy bears with sticks and rocks can absolutely wreck Imperial armor when hope is on the line. John Williams goes full victory-orchestra (the Emperor’s theme, the triumphant Force theme, Luke burning Vader’s body at sunset while "Victory Celebration" swells). When Anakin’s Force ghost smiles at his children one last time and the ghosts of Obi-Wan and Yoda stand beside him… theaters full of grown adults turn into crying eight-year-olds again. It’s big, it’s silly, it’s unapologetically happy, and it’s exactly the catharsis we needed after Empire gut-punched us. Han gets the girl, Leia gets her brother, Luke gets his father back, and the galaxy gets to party on Endor with teddy bears and fireworks. Forty-two years later, that final shot of the heroes laughing together while planets across the galaxy celebrate freedom still feels like the happiest ending in blockbuster history. Return of the Jedi doesn’t just close the story. It reminds you why these stories matter in the first place. 10/10. I have a very good feeling about this. ❤️🌟🐻🚀 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/17/25 Full Review Read all reviews
