Stas (Tomasz Medrzak), a 14-year-old Polish boy, and Nel (Monika Rosca), an 8-year-old English girl, become friends in 19th-century Egypt while their engineer fathers help build the Suez Canal. When a local Muslim cleric (Abdel Menam Abu El Fatouh) begins an anti-imperialist rebellion, the two youngsters are kidnapped as hostages by his supporters.
