Dennis Harvey Variety Polished without ever achieving much in the realm of suspense or emotional involvement. Dec 10, 2016 Full Review Johanna Schneller Globe and Mail The plot twists we get are not the ones we want. They look like complications, but they don't deepen the story or connect it to any wider ideas. Rated: 2/4 Dec 9, 2016 Full Review Kimber Myers Los Angeles Times Pretty but oh-so-dumb, "Sugar Mountain" is the cinematic equivalent of a himbo. Dec 9, 2016 Full Review Jeffrey M. Anderson Common Sense Media This ridiculous thriller centers on just about the dumbest scheme ever invented for a movie, yet the filmmakers don't show any awareness of the plan's absurdity; it's played dismayingly straight. Rated: 2/5 Jan 19, 2017 Full Review Todd Jorgenson Cinemalogue Beneath the picturesque snowy Alaskan landscapes, there's not much suspense in this hollow thriller. Dec 16, 2016 Full Review Zach Hollwedel Under the Radar Sugar Mountain isn't flawless ... but, if you're willing to go along for the ride, it's an unexpectedly entertaining, gratifying 106-minute adventure. Timothy T What a very intense thriller filled with a good cast. Loved the story and direction. The ending was fantastic. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/20/24 Full Review Test T I watched this on DVD recently, and it was much better than the reviews would suggest. In terms of marks out of ten I would give: Scenery; 9/10 Music: 7/10 Story: 6/10 Acting: 5/10 Pace: 5/10 Consistency: 3/10 Action & effects: 3/10 The problem with this film is that it starts off like a big budget movie and raises expectations which it fails to deliver. About half an hour in the film starts to feel like a low budget TV drama, and only really rises back above this level for the finale at the end. It's very noticeable and makes the viewer feel short changed. It's still watchable, and has a few interesting twists and turns, but sadly none you won't have seen elsewhere. The other big thing I noticed was that the soundtrack, which I liked, is mixed at too higher volume. In the opening this works to grab the viewers attention and gives the film a sense of dynamism, but later it becomes tiresome and uncomfortable. In summary, if it had a bigger budget and a bit more thought this could have been a great movie. As it is, it just about OK. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/24 Full Review Audience Member It carried a tone of listlessness and blunted emotions that suited the folly of their scheming. It's not a fast moving film, that's for sure, but it is engaging. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member It was good, just good & yes, I would recommend it. Good twist in it, I didn't expect. The ending was NOT what I expect. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Awesome though predictable ! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member The dark escalator has a similar driving force with the immorality being wrongfully weak, but it still provides a thought-provoking conspiracy behind its targeted topic that has brought in minimal thrills.
