What a delightful and bonkers feel good film! I think if this film were done in America, it would be extremely mediocre, but I think Japanese director Juzo Itami knows when to be subtle and when to be bonkers.

It feels very Americanized except for its cartoonish comical Japanese moments but the story seems like a lot of 90s inspirational sports films, just set to a supermarket. That being said, it's highly engaging and more charming than I would have thought.

So this random woman decides to work extra hard in turning a random supermarket into the "best supermarket ever", showing an overly zeal while having absolutely nothing to gain. We follow her struggle to achieve her dream, despite being surrounded by colleagues and bosses who couldn't care less.
Typical Japanese film where one person decides to become the "BEST X EVER" for no reason at all, like Tampopo and the woman who decides to make the best noodles ever, dedicating years in that, for no reason at all.

This film was great! A new favorite of mine. Perfectly cast. Funny, intelligent, and well-directed. This is one of those film's that would be considered a sleeper here in the U.S. if it was actually shown. My personal favorite Juzo Itami film and his second best overall (after his masterpiece Tampopo).

A refreshing comedy about the competition in the supermarket industry i Japan. The main actress is very entertaining with her ideas to improve her boss's sales.
