After her brother's death, Roma Courtney (Carole Lombard) becomes the heiress to his fortune. When fake psychic Paul Bavian (Alan Dinehart) claims to have a message from Roma's dead brother, he coaxes Roma into participating in a séance. Although Roma's fiancé, Grant (Randolph Scott), first believes the séance is nothing more than a scam, he eventually realizes that the vengeful spirit of an executed murderer (Vivienne Osborne) has possessed Roma's body.

Dodgy spiritualists, venal land-ladies, poison rings; wonderful atmosphere of dread and heightened emotions - created through sound and subtle touches and framing as much as the usual tricks. I like Lombard playing so against type - just a shame the plot's so bloody complicated in so little time. See more 01/20/2014 Outrageously melodramatic opening credits set the stage for a fun, though flawed, tale of spiritual possession and occult charlatanism.
